Springer rocks Castle Rock Tl', takes point lead By Dale Brown CASTLE ROCK, W A, JULY 8 Harley-Davidson'sJay Springsteen took the lead in the closing stages of the 25-lap Castle Rock TT to win by a few bikelengths over Steve Eklund in their continuing battle on the American Moto~cyclist Ass~eiat~on Grand National Championship I Camel Pro Series. Springer's win, which came on 10 the jumpless TT course at the Cowliu County Fairgrounds in an event promoted by the Mt. St . Helen's M.C .. was his fourth of the year. The win put him three points ahead - 166-163 of Eklund , who has won five, in the Camel Pro point standings. In recent years , riders from the Pacifi c Northwest have dominated the Castle Rock TT. And so it almost was this year . Mickey Fay , aboard a Hank Saenze/SIR-PM~ Triumph, le~ 22 laps of the National after getting a good start only to succumb to mechanical problems and drop to fifth place. . The top 10 in the National were as follows: Springsteen, Eklund , Brand Hurst, Gary Scott, Fay, Alex Jorgensen, Dave Aldana , Billy Oliver , Don Dodge and Randy Goss . Time Trials There were n ine riders with Nati~m~l numbers in the top 10 after qualifying, and the one without the Na tional number, Bernie Larson, was the fast qualifier. Larson pushed his To~/Self/Perf Fabrications-sponsored . T numph around the track in 23.40 seconds. Brad Hurst (T orco/ KRW / Bradley 's Refrigerat ion Tri ) wa s second fastest at 23.42, followed by Mickey ' Fay at 23.48. Eklund, on his Mario Zanotti -sponsored, Tom Hasler tuned 750 Yamaha , was the last of the heat -race polesitters at 23 .51. Springsteen qualified the Bill Wernertuned H -D at 23.60, seventh fastest. Heat race S T?e first h~at was a Ga l)' ~cott wireto-wire special , Scott, riding a KK M~torcycle Supply -spon~ored Triumph , was never sen ously challenged after he took the lead in the first corner. .Larson took second ea rly, but Ran~y Scott (T o rco/ Herschback Tn ), Randy Goss (Wiseco / Kl o tz / Fu ll House /Vi st a Sheen H ·D ) and defending champ Randy _ S~i~c:r . .( ~ essler Perf.lKRW T r:i) were quickly past . After five laps, Skiver had displaced Goss , and on the following lap Randy Scott had a mishap on the right -hander. That made the top three Gary Scott, Skiver and Goss. They stayed that way and transferred to the National. Mike Sullivan (BSA) finished fourth ahead of Larson. ~on Dodge (Tri) and Lester Huey (Tn) shared holeshot honors in the second heat, but Dodge quickly pulled away to lead the remainder of the event. Darrell Hendrickson (Wayne Hendrickson Nor) moved to second with Brad Hurst and Huey following. Hurst got on Hendrickson's tail and then passed him at the midway point to occupy second. Hendrickson stayed in third ahead of Larry Legara (T i) and Harley-Davidson factory teams~r Corky Keener. Heat three was a Mickey Fay all -theway race as the Auburn, WA , resident went wire to wire in the lead. Gary Davis crashed on the second lap when a rider hit his front wheel, and that brought out the red flag . Fay took the lead again , with Springsteen and Alex Jorgensen Oorgy's BSA) in second and third. T?e top three stayed that way, a.nd semi -bound were factory Harley nder Ted Boody, three-time Castle Rock winner Chuck Joyner (Bob's Body Shop Tri) and John Hateley (T rackm aster / W eb co/ H a teley Em. Tri). The fourth heat went to Steve Eklund, who got out front in a hurry and stretched out a good lead. Billy Oliver (Tri) grabbed second off the start and held it to the finish as well. H~nk . S~?tt (Carl Patrick Tri) was third Initially, but crashed. His spot went to Dave Aldana , riding a borrowed Triumph that he had first ridde~ (and seen) midway through practice. Aldana stayed in third and led Steve Morehead (KK Supply/K&K Insurance H -D) and Danny Hockie (T ri) to the finish . . J unior Invitatio nal . Orego~'s John Wincewicz (Tri) Jumped Into the lead, followed by Dennis Fitze (T ri) . The start had been rc;d-fl:agged . though, and when they did It agam . fast qualifier Steve Monger (Yam) led ahead of Wincewicz, Fitze and Ken Celorie (Tri), Wincewicz, riding for Powroll, ' got by Monger within a couple of laps a?d led the ~ay, while Celorie passed Fitze, Later In the race, Celorie also passed Monger to make the finish Oregonians Wincewicz and Celorie first and second, Cal ifornians Monger and Fitze third and fourth . . Semis Corky Keener and Larry Legarra went zooming into tum one together, but Keener took the lead. Legarra's hold on second was brief because Mike Sullivan relieved him of it a couple of laps later. Sullivan then went after Keener and caught up to him as the race reached its midway stage. Sullivan pulled right up to Keener, especially late in the comers, but Corky seemed to have power enough to hold off the charges. That's what he did right down to the finish . Scott Pearson (Harley-Davidson West H-D) was third ahead of Brian Peterson (Self/Muzzy Cycle Tri). There was very nearly an en masse rollover at the start of the second semi: so many people were sent back tha~ they had to create two penalty lines. Ted Boody was the only rider left on the front row and Rick Hocking (T ri) was the only rider left on the second row. Boody took the lead, followed by Hocking and Steve Morehead. Danny Hockie moved into third, but crashed, giving the position back to Morehead. Chuck Joyner got past Morehead and Hocking late in the race, while Morehead and Gary Davis passed Hocking too . At the checkered, Bood y had a comfortable margin for the win and final transfer, Joyner had second, while Davis wheelied past Morehead right at the checkered flag . Tro phy Race Scott Pearson had been getting better as the evening went on, and he took the Trophy Race lead ahead of
