Jim Murphy and John Stoffel were getting radical in th e rollers a nd dropoffs. Ed Whisenant was a fte r Bill Zoller. who was making a rapid dash for the pass. W in d ing out of the canyon , Sterling Varner st a rted the long trek across the J ohnso n Valley. Mi ke Sm ith was gaining on J eff Moeller as th e two crossed BMR on into the h a rd p an trail. Chris Nelson d idn't ha ve tim e to pa y attention to Mike W alters just ahead . he had a handful of whoops to co ntend with . J R . Strachen h ad the sa me pro blem . Phil Mendoza co u ld see th e pits . so could Bob J ackson but the course took them left towa rd Mayes Mounta in . Bob Morris sta rted up the m ountain wondering how they would get him down . Dave Jones a nd Mark Fer ro ce wer e ridge running . Jim McGraw sta rte d down th e downhill . soon Murry Kapko , Bob Anderson and J ack Davis follow ed . The first bik e int o th e pi ts was Rich Varner. followed by two fast pi e platers. then Pete Postel. who verbally honks at slow riders on downhills . Mitch Sm iley took on the secon d loop determined to do better then J esse James, who moved u p nine spots on the first go around . A few bikes back , Bob Jackson was trying to pass Cindy Max but she managed to hold him off. Ron Hermansen and 465c battled a ll the wa y down the wide , wid e was h . The nex t guy really rounded off his knobbies, coming from so far back on th e first loop m ost people can't count that high . T om Pu rdy za pped everyone in sigh t and took after J a m es Mu rphy. Da ve J ones and Senior Val Morris cleared BMR and sta rted for space m ou nta in . Keith Ba edor had a C bike in front of him , C bikes were at large this week , Ted Hunnicutt , J r. T he top eig h t wer e through th e canyon . into the valley and heading for th e cam pgrou nd seven m iles away . Dick Eva ns . second 250cc , was busy with Dennis Lanski . Cl iton Wood wanted a rou nd Kirk Kandt for second Open. J esse J ames wa s first Open and intended to keep it that wa y. Mitch Smiley' caught up to Pete Postel on Ma yes Mountain but couldn't pass on th e downhill. Rich Varner cruised through th e roller s an d int o the finish for th e overa ll Novi ce win .
