CA , J UNE 30 Some of the local flat track talent obviously decided they couldn't handle back to back half miles, choosing to wait for Saturday 22 night at San Jose rather than Frid ay at Ascot . Eddie Lawson on his Shell Ra cin g Specialties Yamaha turned th e fastest time at 22 .65 seconds on a nice damp track with Sal Hoffman th e fastest Junior at 22.97 . Juniors and Experts ran together and Eddie Lawson won th e first and fastest heat with Mike Minnig second . Dorothy Rowe was behind Steve Carrilo and Mike Kunsman but made the move past both of them coming out of tu rn two . With two Corona Raceway big bi ke wins under her belt, Rowe looks better each time out. but Friday she couldn't hang onto th e front end when it snapped on her exiting turn four and , although she went down very hard , a trip to the hospital wasn't necessary. Art Fredenburgh had the lead in the second heat until he caught a toe and Mike Inderbitzen took full advantage of Art's attempts to stay on board by slipping by. Third heat went to Tom Berry , who fell off first time out through th e south tum, getting a bon us of a red flag as he bou nced to his feet . He went for the lead again and took it with Richie Volk second and Sal Ho ffm an th ird . H offm a n wanted that transfer spot badly a nd never let u p the pressure on Volk until he got it right on th e last lap. Wayne Rainey, on the other Shell Racing Specialties Yamaha, served notice he was in his usual fine form by taking the outside line into the lead by the time he exited turn two . Eddie San Roman 'was second 'u n til Brad Holt arrived and too k over . In the sem i it was hot and heavy . John Sperry went. from first to th ird in the scramble through tu rn two : Steve Monger's bik e straigh tened up on him very abruptly but he stayed aboard while Sperry came ro a rin g back up full th rottle and th ey swa pp ed th e lead for a bit with Monger finally ta king it . . Fredenburgh shot for th e front in the Trophy Dash but Ra iney and Eddie Lawson blew right by him with Lawson settling in for th e win . Fredenburgh pulled off with Sal Hoffman end ing third. For Jeff Haney it was business as usual, he was in the lead of the Novice main by the end of lap one. Steve Polson had the second spot briefly but Jeff Allison took it away and there in third was Mon tana n Todd Giesick , His van license pla tes say "Hotshoe" and that he is as he kept the likes of Steve Polson, Ron Arlt and Jay Lewis behind him , when they all know Ascot like the backs of their ha nds. Giesick was a ll sm iles after the race. When told ou t of state Novices aren't supposed to be that fast at Ascot (that's th l; legen~ .a.nmay) he gr!nn~d "I've never ridden anything like this before. Never. But I had to get down here to get some points, it's dead up my way," and stuffing his bike in the van he was all ready to follow the rest of the gang to O regon . The Ascot mystique hadn't bothered him one bit. , The Junior/Expert main was a real go for a while between T om Berry and Eddie Lawson , even to the point of a bit of handlebar banging. Berry took the lea d, then a lap or so later, La wson sho t by into tum on e. W ayne Ra iney was right with the m making a three way go for it, on one la p he went throug h tu rn one very quickly indeed but he brough t himself and the bike back down into the groove togethe r and gave Berry plenty to thi nk a bo u t. At this po int Steve Monger had Ra iney in his sights and was getting ready to pass should the opportunity arise . Sud de nly Rainey went way high and then dropped out. "I suddenly couldn't see a th ing," he said later. A clod had shattered his face shield in half. "And th e bike was running just gr eat, too ." His teammate Lawson was still steaming awa y up front but Berry got on it , waited for th e ope ning a nd took it a nd although Eddie breathed heavily down his neck for a few laps T om d idn't make any mistakes and p ulled away a bit from th e talented young rooki e. Coming on hard was John Sperry , picking th em off on e by on e until he got up to fifth but his charge couldn't get him past Mike Minnig who had fourth spot firmly in hand. Up front Berry continued on to the checkered flag , with he and Lawson being quite a way out front of the rest of th e riders. Next Ascot half mile will be J uly 14, th e Gardena Gold Cu p followed on the 15th by the Nationa l TT. Results TROPHY DASH: I , Eddie Lawson (Yam); 2.
