In the last moto th ough , he ca me off the line sideways and managed to hit Ca rroll's rear wheel with his rear wheel; quite a feat. Ca rroll ended up second overall and Jay Ba les was third . Bales really had a good dice going first moto with Pete Hames , running side by side a lot of the time. Four hacks were on hand trying things out, and although they did play follow the leader, the Husqvarna hack of Mark Reinhart and Damon Duckett sure is fast. They blew off one of John Palfreyman's big rigs. Now hear this: Check the Calendar pages regularly . Crawfords have good time at URA ' enduro BySueSenn Photo by Gary Steele RED MOUNTAIN , CA,JUNE 11 The dry hea t that covered the Red Moun tai n area was quite a contrast from the snow of last year's Uni ted Racing Association Good T im e enduro. This dryness , plus youngsters with fireworks , created a heck of a lot of exci tement when th e desert brush caught on fire Sa tu rday afternoon . As people scattered in all directions , 15-yea r -old Steven Young kept his coo l when he ran to move a 50 -gallon drum of ga soline out of the path of th e fir e . While Steve struggled desp erately to mo ve th e drum , fellow bikers were . ' stom ping : - • sliciveling - - and- - a orng I wha tever was need ed to dou se th e raging in ferno . Scott's m other , Ka y, claimed second, losin g only five seconds a nd 10-year-old Steve Jensen was th ird with a 0 :38 . How good th e Good T im e was dep ended entirel y .on whose op inion on e was listening to at the moment. Bev Donat, a 175c c Crider, described th e first loo p as "the best" she ha s ever ridden in her two and a ha lf years of enduro riding. She was mostly impressed by the variety of terrain, which included sa ndwashes, rocks , whoop-de -docs and several challenging hi lls. She admitted that the smaller bikes proba bly had trouble in the sandwashes and also with signs that kept riders on their toes . If an arrow indicated turn, it meant now. How goon the:t7 . L rnile second loop was , again depended on the opinion of th e rider one happened to be talking to . "T'irn Holcombe , 18, was riding his second end uro and he had his share of ·problems. He rode his 250cc Yamaha into ch eck E with th e throttle stuck wide open. At th is point he was pretty much on tim e , but he stopped to mak e some repairs . As he kicked over the engi ne, he found th e throttle ha d stuck agai n a nd th e bik e jumped out , riderless, spinning on d own th e trail. Holcombe fin all y fou nd his problem a nd lat er a t home check, he was all smi les about just fini shing aft er he had found the course much rou gh er than anything he had expected . "C" rider Steve Pisarik, 16, on an IT250 , sai d " It would hav e been a great winter loop. Even with th e break at Charlie's, it was just too long for the heat ." H e said he had bo th wheels locked up on the two big downhills, and was still gaining speed. Especially into th e one that had the tie breaker check at the bottom . Another opinion came from Bob Kerns , a 25 -year-old Open A rider. "Su per, the whole thing was really great. Those downhills just topped it off . They were deep soft sand, so even if you went down , you cou ld n' t get hurt. " Kerns tries to rid e as many en du ros as possible and he also races stock cars at Orange Show Speedway. Regardless of whose opinion , one th ing is for sure. The overall winner of both loops was a 15-year-old " B" rider, Kid Crawford who had a time of O :~ I or a loss of o nly on e second. Second-p lac e time was 0 :34 , claimed by Dennis Weber (O pen "D") and third place, 0:42 , went to Kid 's dad , Jim Crawford (250cc " B") . Official results are pending , but it's pretty certain Kid and his dad also claimed th e brass for number one parent /child team . Cavness, Ward, Myerscough win atSSMMX By Terry Whytal O RANGE , CA , J UNE 3 Rid ing with a bad ly spra ined foot , O ra nge County Suzuki's Scott Cavness pulled off the last " " • moto win to take th e 500cc Pro overall win ahea d of Ma ico rid er Val Tarnietti . Tamietti and Ca vness had a very close' duel go ing for second until Cavness twist ed his foot and slowed off th e pace , to fin ish a distant third. Tarnietti qu ickly grabbed th e lead in the second moto with heavy pressure from Cavness and Marino. The three riders stuck close together until th e . halfway point when Marino dropped out. Two la ps later Cavness bega n an incredible charge that carried hi m past Tamietti and to a big 'lead a t th e checkers. "It's sm oother and easier to ride than my 125 and you don't get as tired ," said Jeff after totally dominating both 250cc Pro mo tos. Ward made it look easy by pulli ng th e holeshot in both motos a nd then opening u p h uge leads. Ku rt Sofk a put his Ca n- Am into seco nd in both motos and rounding out the top three was Scott Lester on a Honda . Team Suzuki rider Bria n Myers cough jumped to a big lead at the start of t he first 125cc Pro moto . Be hind him came Tony Gomez on a Suzuki, Craig Dale on a Suzuki , and Ted Hoyt on a Suzuki. LoIS of Suzukis! Myerscough held th e lead from wire to wire with Gomez finishing second and Dal e third .
