"Sp ringsteen is tou gh. L uckily, he
doesn't ro ad ra ce. He wants to rid e one
of th e old Ha rleys at Lo udon (Sp ringer
will rid e if H ·D feels t he bike is compe tit ioe.. . Edit or) a nd I kn ow th at he
co uld finish in th e top 14 because he's
a ra cer. Ther e a re a lot of ride rs o ut
there who co m pete in road races th a t
are not ra cers. T hey do it because its
fun and a neat spo rt . If you' re a ra cer not just a rid er - you can be a t hreat
even if you get a lit tle o ut of shape or
put you r foot down . It doesn't matter .
The drive has to be there .
"J ay is d arn good on a 250cc road
rac er and he is strong in all dirt events.
The m iles might be a problem for him
this yea r because it look s as if th e fac tory is down a few horsepower. Even
so, Jay is Mister Consistent. He's
always right there ,
" G a ry Scott ha s a lso built a
reputation o n co nsistency. He 's a good
TT rider as well as bein g dangerous on
th e mil es and half m iles. He had a lot
of ba d lu ck road ra cing last yea r, but
he 's a good ro ad ra cer if every t hi ng is
going good for him . He will run right
wit h you if things are going his wa y,
but road racing has to be his weakest
po int this year. Also .Scott isn' t reall y
strong on the short tracks , but since
there are only two of them that isn' t
critical.
" I feel that Steve Eklund will be th e
toughest competitor this yea r. Steve,
as he really sh owed at Houston , can be
very , very tough on both th e TT and
short track , He is re all y good at
reading a track and setting his motorcycle up for the co ndi tio ns, I don't
know where he learned it - probably
from all the Sp ortsman racing he
