Garry "Pugs" Garrison leads Bill Sny{!er (1). Dan Robertson 11331 and Keith Hams at KMSA Short Track. . Robertson takes KMSAST By Dick Ainsworth WICHITA. KS.JUNE 10 Saturday was another of the regular schedu led short tra cks by the Wichita Jeeps . and be sides the regular KMSA racers on hand . a large g ro u p fro m Ok lahoma. Arkansas. Colorad o and Texas were th er e to che ck out th e tr ack prior to th e J eeps' upcom ing AMA Am a teur Regional. Last cha nces to make the 250 cc ma in ca me with two consie races in wh ich Keith H arris ran away with th e first whil e Tim Newby took th e lead fro.m .M.e1 Wats.on in the last . Newby built It Into a big lead. wheelied down the back chute and promptly fell in turn number three. Watson won: In the final . Phi l Cu lver. took the lead over. Gary Garrison whi le Kreg H unt fell In turn number one and laid there p laying possu m to get a resta rt. O n th e restart Garrison shot to th e fro nt ahead of Dan Robertson and Harris . By lap number four Hunt h ad mov ed into thi rd whil e Bill Sn yder and Culv er fought over fifth . Robertson and. Garrison went a t it lap a fter lap until Robertson got by. Then it was bye -bye as Robertson pu t space between himself and Ga rrison . Ross Duncan won the Senior Mini fin al over Todd Hil yard and Todd Ratl!ff with Todd H aag taking fourth . Hil yard led the 100cc final until Roger Schellenberger and Roger Haynie got by. Haynie took th e lead on the fifth lap and won. Bill Dusenberry . Sr.. led the Old Timers hea t until the las t lap when Larry Kennedy got by. Kennedy led the final all th e way as Dusenberry worked up to second at th e end. Kirk England took the lead in the 125cc final but fell after Haynie and Schellenberger got by. Culver moved up to third. Chad Olinger ran away wit h the 200cc h ea t a nd grabbed the lea d in the - final as Steve Curry nipped it on the sta rting li!1e. Ch ris Eg bert stayed wit h Ch ad un til hal fway and then Olinger bega n to open it up . Ken nedy took th e lead in t he 500cc fina l. but Hu nt fe ll off again a nd th e race was stopped . De nn is Byrne too k t he lead on the resta r t foll owed by Kenned y. J oh n Issacs, Gary Lawrence and H unt. Byrne and Ken nedy put on a ba ttle for the lead while lssacs, L~wrence and Hunt fought over third . Bill Snyder and Gary Schl ickau moved up to battle. but Sch lickau fell off and had to be helped from th e track with an inj ured leg . Sn yder got by Issacs for third . C .D . Martin ran away with th e Open heat and took th e lead in the final . followed by Tim Lindfors. Bill Myers and Mark Kumle. On lap number four Lindfor s missed a sh ift coming out of number two and Myers took over second . JUNE 11 Sunda y was a 'su per race a t the R a c~ Pla ce by the Spau lding family . It was a GNC Q ua lifier for both t he June 26 Supercross at Los Angeles and the August 6 Kawa sak i Good Times National at Lake W~itney . To top that it was also triple POInts and a KMSA Bonus ra ce . All entries got a free three-color shirt transfer from Edward Jaworsky of Team T -Shirt. Troy Rhoten appeared to be heading for another 250cc Expert sweep as he did the day before. He flew to victory in the first moto while Garry Maier. MikeDorsey and Bud Lee fought over second. Kelly McGrew flew over the handlebars at the start and on lap number three Maier bailed -off and got up in las t place. Rhoten ran away with it as Dorsey slipped by Lee on th e last lap . In the last moto R;!:'oten agai n shot to the front . but Maler was right with him a nd the two began to open up a gap on th e rest of the fie ld. It was tigh t and Rh ot en lost control in the ch ug holes and crashed ha rd . with Maier not having a ny esca pe. Both ended o n t he ground . th en Maier hop ped up . Rhot en was shake n a nd it was a while before he moved . Ma ier's fro nt end was tweaked bad enough to. keep him out and Rhoten was just plain tweaked himself. Do rsey took over the lead . followed by Mark Darrah, Lee a nd David Br ack . Dorsey ran away with it as Darrah. Lee and Brack fought for second. At th e white flag Lee slipped into second and a litt le la ter Br ack fell off, giving Darrah third. Pat McCain endoed hard in the whoops follow ing the I OOcc Junior first turn and required medical assistance from th e track's "rocket paramedi c." This guy turns faster lap times th an some of the Experts! Curt St ewart inherited the lead with Melvin Green in second . but Stewart crashed comi ng off a jump a nd Gr een became lead er . followed by Kri s Kowa lsky and Eric Unrein . After the white flag came out both Kowalsky and Unrein passed Green , with Kris winning. Green ran off with th e last moto over Kowal sky and Unrein . Brad Nuckells took th e lead in th e first 125cc Junior moto over Kurt J ohnston and Monty Crowley. But Crowley took the lead on the next lap and went on to win as Wes Kluckner moved up from a bad sta rt to take second. Johnston took the lead in the last moto, foll owed by Klu ckner and Crowley. Kluckner closed on Johnston. and on lap number five J ohnston fell and his leg was pinned ' under his bike with the throttle stuck wide open . Assistance was quick to help him as everyone raced around him for three la ps wit h Kluckner win ni ng over Crow ley. T he 125cc Experts roared off the line with Chris Coa tes comp letely m issin g the first tu rn and ending u p nea r the finish line. Mike Dorsey too k the lead . followed by Ward Wiebe. Hoss Haley . Tim Schul tz. Ra nd y Allenbrand and Maier . For three laps it was a six -way batt le for the lead u nt il Maier fell in .. . ... a.ic;r.;va~ .. . . .t ~~ .upP! I! :. ~.,:, ~ M. .....'!,p qui C;~l y . a nd before long he zipped by Schultz for fourt h . On lap number six Haley took second while Maier mov ed into third a nd they battled Dorsey for the lead. Mai er tried Haley on the outside. but fell again . With a lap to go Ha ley too k the lea d while Schu ltz fell . giving third to Mike Boston . Mai er took the holeshot in the last moto and moved away fro m the field as Haley and Dorsey continued their battle with a' ra ce -long bout for seco nd . Boston moved up to join the fracus and it was Do rsey taking second a t th e end. Pat Su n neberg won both 250cc Junior motos , upsetting the favorite Gregg Rom ine . who took second. but could only manage a fourth in the last moto behind T om Br idges and Jim Spellman. Romine was strong in the Open Junio~ as he won both moros by a large margIn . Dorsey led the first Open Expert moto but Maier got by on a slick inside pass coming into th e front chute.
