O n e hundred and fifty -eight ri d e r s a tt acked the hill . whic h had another 1000 feet that could be used if it were cleared . In the 370cc class Lind a WilhiLe scared the men when she turned a time ofll .6 seconds on a 360cc Yamaha . It was the second fastest time of th e day at that time and her husband Wayne had a hard time beati ng her. He . finally did on the same 360 and LOok first, bUL she sure shook him a nd a lot of other men up . Tom Hairston was the first person to put any big iron on the hill , but somet hing came apart in his 750cc Triumph and the top was not his. Mike Poll ey rode another 750cc Triumph fOT the first time a nd showed his dad that he can ride the big bikes. with a 12 flat and a n 11.5 on the second , which sent him home with third in the 750cc class. Henry . Mike's dad, went half a second faster at II even to capture firs t on the same bike . The rea l excitement came in the Open and Exhib ition classes. Sta n Hickey and Tom H airston had their 1000cc Tri umph triples pri med for the attack and Henry Polley was ready on his 800cc T riumph. Hic key was riding the 1000 for the first Lime and had a little trouble sorting ou t the gears on the first rou nd . and found out that third will not work . Polley came out of . the hole WFO and ne~er let up for the whole 500 feel. His 10 flat was the fas test time by' a good ·m a rgin . Tom Hairston and his 1000 tried hard, but could only Lie Polley. In t h~ Exhibition class things were about the same. Polley put in anot her 10-second run . b ut Ha irston used his tire wit h th e m eta l paddles and that was a mistake, he p ut in a slowe r time. Things changed in the second ro und. Hickey sorted out his gears and found second . His triple was ready to go and it did. Nine point eig ht seconds put him on top. Polley's second run in the Open was only 10.4 seconds and his cl utch went out to put him out of the race. Hai rston was having clutch troubles with his 1000 and had to leave the battle. JUNE 10 Some controversy arose when Garry Maier entered all three Expert classes when m an y tracks have policies, as does KMSA , to no more than two classes by anyone rider on anyone day . But Maier was allowed to ride all three and he ended up winning all mOLOs in both the 125cc and Open class. but had to Lake a second overa ll to Troy R hoten , who won both motos in - the 250cc at Enterprise motocross Satu rday. This was the first day in a two-day motocross weekend at Ra ce Place a nd the Spaulding family had the track in tip -top condition. The water truck gOL qu ite a workout and races began promptly a t 2;30. a llowing those who work on Saturday until noon to arrive . sign -in and pra ct ice. The. track was run in a counter-clockwise direction . That eveni ng the Spau ldings furn ished the grills. charcoal. baked potatoes and sa lad. all you had to bring was you r own meal and drinks.
