Crai g Armstrong worked his wa y up ' to second with Sal Hoffman and Eddie San Roman filling out th e transfer spots . The trophy dash was a ga s. Ri cky Graham and Art Friedenburg jumped as they tried to read the starter but that worthy g a ined control of the racers and off they went . J ohn Sperry a nd Friedenb urg stuck to ea ch other like glue . th en Spe rry pulled aw ay . But Art was after him . inadverten tly ran into him . a nd in the p ro cess of tryi ng to stay aboa rd his H a rley, J ohn go t his left leg stuck u nder the back fender. He rode a lmost a fu ll lap tha t way , arriving a t t he start/fi nish lin e in a h ell of a posi tio n wh ere an astonished official extricated hi m . It happened , honest! The Nov ice m ain was a good one . Ron Arlt took the lead , ne ver to lose it al tho ugh he nearly d id severa l times . Jeff Allison arrived in second place only to have h is bike break. Next one up was R ob Selvy, who went for the lead spot a bit too hard. hit Arlt's rear wh eel and got spi t off. T he re was no tim e for Arlt to ca tch a breath because Steve Polson arri ved on his rear wh eel full steam ahead. but sta y ahead he did as .Ken Robichoux came around for th e third ahead of Stev e Adkins . Don Grigsby had the lead in th e Junior fin al for a bit , until Mik e Inderbitzen took it away but most eyes were on Wayne Rainey . He had gotten a wretched start but went from last to th ird place in two laps. H e t he n went after Grigsby. taking the second p la ce aw ay with a cros sover . T he racing was furious with two separate fights taking place. for the third spot it wa s Grigsby and St eve Monger swapping spo ts but what was going on up front had the stands on their fee t. Inderbitzen was d oing a magnificent j ob d efending against Rainey. Even when he made a bobble and Wayne passed him go in down the back chute. Inderbitzen jus t left it on. held on and took th e lead back again int o tum one. Mike Myers d ropped out early on in th e Ex pert Main . but out front was Bob Sanders . Bobby had gotten on e of his fa mous st arts again and off they went with Travis Perron and St eve Fortune behind . Ricky Graham was coming on up though. making his way b y Fortune withou t any doors be in g opened for him. and then he took on Petton. They went at it for a wh ile as Sanders still sa iled away up fr on t. Finally Graham nailed Petton and went after Sanders and then Bobby did som ething he later admitted he shouldn't have done , "I changed m y line." he sa id . " and I know better than that. " When he realized that Ricky was going to get him , and he tried to go back to the first line. the rubber wasn't there on the rear tire. Graham happily took th e win . th en came Sanders , Petton , and Art Friedenburg. John Sperry. still go ing aft er . his historic efforts in th e dash . came in sixth. a place he has sha red back and forth with Steve Fortune who got fifth . • · . ~----------------------------------------~ .
