T he Junior classes saw three new faces in th e winne r's ci rcl e: Ra ndy Norma n scored ' his first ever 500cc win ; John Mello took the 250cc stoppi ng Bill Silvers' win streak at two - a nd Fr ank Yancey, who had a h a rd spill earlier in the yea r, had h is first win in th e 125cc Division Two class. You ng Norman 's ' win was esp ecially exciting to your reporter, since it was h is first ever ride on a " b ig- bike" an d it seemed like just yesterday we were int ro d ucing him at Baron a Oa ks on a Mini! (Ac tua lly it was a yea r ago .) Nothi ng cha nged in the Coke/ Sa n Diego High School MX Series fin a ls, as Sa nt a na became th e firs t rep ea t winner in th e five -year histo ry of the series with a valiant effort by El Capital a nd Monte Vista , finishi ng up second a nd thi rd , respectively. Although th e tota l number of schoo ls compet in g was down from last yea r (22 vs. 29 ), the co m pe titi on was th e to ughest ever as a ll of th e top 10 tea ms had good representation a lmost every week . My An nouncer's Trophy for the individ ua l high point hig h school rider went to Clint Hardick in a close one over T racy McMillen. H a rd ick had the edge with 18 class wins to 17 for McMillen and six seconds to McM illen 's two.
