groove. A deep cushion had developed above th e groove and the re was debate on how long a rider cou Id thrash aro u nd up there befor e d ropping to the lower - a nd quite slick - groove. Mike Kidd , plagu ed by m id -pack starts in recent weeks, decided to "try a lill ie harder for a good start. " De pe ndi ng on wh ich rider you listened to after th e race, Kid d either read the sta rt ing lig hts superb ly or put a bike length on t he field before the green ligh t -came on . In a ny case , as Kid d sai d later , "The lead lasted u nt il tu rn two wher e Bood y an d Sp ringer b lew past me. " Keener had lock ed hi mself right on Kidd's rear tire on th e opening lap and zippe d past on lap two to set the top four spo ts althou gh the batt le between Springer a nd Boody wouldn't be settled u nt il la p I I. Ca mpbell turned the wick up and fin ish ed 10th , Steve Eklund was also a victim of th e sta rt. " I'm bummed ," 'said Eklu n d afterwards. " 1 try to play by the boo k and mak e a clean start like we are supposed to . Heck, you ca n't win if everyone else on the sta rti ng line is cheat ing exc ep t you rsel f." Eklund was floundering in ninth on lap six . The Boody/Sprin ger b attle ha d drawn aw ay from th e rest of the field by lap six with Springer probing Boody at every cha nce wh ile look in g for the best way a round . Front tire choi ce was la ter given by many rid ers as th e reason for success or fa ilure. A slip on the groove meant - hopefully - onl y on e lost position. Although for som e , it was more. The top five were set by lap 15 although Kidd made a mov e o n Keen er and there was plenty of activity between Bro w, Eklund and Aksland .
