Greg will race whenever he has a chance. and we look forward to staying in touch with all of you . Please let me know if I can help in any way regarding pictures and negatives I might have . I especially want to thank Cycle News and Dale Brown for constant support and valuable feedback . I wish American Motocross Enterprises nothing but the best, and with the right priorities given precedence. there should be no end to their growth and success. Our love to all of you I LEE TAYLOR , GREG . AND KEVIN Valencia. CA Poetic partspersons protest The papers enclosed as you can see , Were battered and torn and to hard 10 read , So please make a note as you read th is letter. ' To package your Cycle N ews a little bit better! RICK & DALE (Pa rts) Lynwo od Yamaha . Inc . Lynwood. WA too far from anyone for them to complain. Even though we had to drive a rough dirt road through a bird and wildlife sanctuary that bordered the riding area , every kind of bike and rider knew the score and pitched in to keep it safe and clean. Then one day survey markers appeared. We all know what woud follow : Development, civilization, people, complaints and the loss of yet another area . I haven't been to Gavilan since, but I heard something about it that makes me cringe. Over Memorial Day weekend .Gavilan Hills and the surroundng area was destroyed by a 700 ·acre brush fire . It lasted several days, took 150 fire fighters and wiped out some of the prettiest, if not best riding in southern California . How did this destruction come to pass? Unauthorized off-roaders? Renegade bikers? Nol A damn tractor without a spark arrestor. The irony- a tractor. that bastion of civilization and progress. No one will remember that. You can bet they'll recall the numerous bikes and assume we' had something to do with that fire . Guilty by association. I hope the message is clear. Bikers, protect your rights. all of them , no matter how frustra ting it may so m etim es seem . LARRY V. CECHIN Huntington Bea ch , CA Sorry . guys. W e've aske d th e post office work ers not to run over your Cycle N ews package with a tru ck next time. Should help . . . Editor. More Camel Pro coverage In memory of Gavilan Many of ' us h ere in southern Califoria remember a great place for dirt rid ing called ' Gavilan Hills with acre s of grassy hillsides, some ro cky t r ails. tree -covered m eadows that a llowed fam il y picn ic king , some wa te rho les , eve n some good fo u r , wheeling. The best pa rt was, it was free . W e all resp ected that a rea . bringing in our own trash cans a nd a lways cleaning u p after a good d ay's ride . Gavilan Hi lls was private p ropert y, but th e "Writt en Permission in Ha nd " rule was never enforced. I guess we wer e I would like to reinforce th e letters of Rob ert Duncan and Steve Buxton in th eir request for more AMA Grand Nati onal Championship/Camel Pro Serie s co ve r a ge . In my wa y of thinking . th e Grand National is and a lw ay s has b een the premiere mot or cycle series in th e U.S . Lik e Robert Duncan . I too was a subsc r ibe r to M ot or cycle W eekly because of th eir exce llent National coverage a nd point sta ndi ng cha rt. th e type of cove rage th e series deserves. Nowlhat M C W is (a ppare nt ly) gone. I am relyi ng on Cycle N ews to keep me informed . Hop efully our letters will encourage mor e detailed reporting of th e series. I would like 10 d irect th is lett er to two _d ifferent groups invo lved with speedway racing in sout hern Cal ifornia . t he promot ers and the riders. First . to th e riders who ca n't seem to get th eir act together: As me m bers of the Speedway R acin g Association . last year you had a cha nce to stic k toge ther as ' professional racers and dem and some cha nges from th e prom ot ers. Again thi s yea r. you hav e a chance to stic k togethe r: ' th er e is a new track op en that is willin g to meet th ese demands. But wh en scare ta ctics were applied ($500 fin e), they worked . I'm all for th e expa nsio n of the speed way racing circuit as well as others. but a t thi s ra te , I can hardly expect any progress. Rem ember . you a re th e on es the spec tators pay to see. not the promoters. The second group is th e promolers, mainly Harry Oxl ey. Your im plica tion is . that you ca n not afford to inc orporate a ny of the changes into your program such as a 10% increase in overage money. an increase in the pu rse and an increase in the insurance coverage. I'm su re you' ve not iced a considerable increase in the COSI of living in the past few yea rs. I don't . have to tell you that the same goes for ra cing. . My question is this : Why, if you can't afford to comply with these increases. are you penalizing any rider $500 if he takes it upon himself to make extra money by riding this new track? I would like to see Mr. Oxley respond and answer my question publicly so that we all can see just exactly what his standpoint is. KEITH BRADFORD Buena Park. CA S tarr s t r u c k I wish to give you hearty thanks for the attention you brought to our filming project at the CRC Tenderfoot Enduro this past weekend. We had a goodly number of people who braved the excessive heat and stuck it out until we had completed our "people across the desert" sequence. I screened the footage today, and I am very pleased. We got everything that we anticipated and needed. Please give a special thanks to all who turned up : they really were a great bunch of "weeken d warriors". Jerry McNeal of CRC also deserves a pat on the back for organizing such a first class family event. Thank you a ll, and see you at the premiere! PETER STARR Los Angeles.
