Taking a calcu lated gamble in the opening 28 · lap race Ba ker decided to ride the event non -stop. b ut then ran out of fuel on the final lap , less than half a mile from the nag when lying third . A ustra lia n Gregg Hansfon hit trouble o n the last lap. too . He had an enormous slide o n t he works Kawasaki two corners from home and then crashed at th e last bend. trying to pa ss Pat rick Pons. Hansford was unhurt , but unable to rejoin the race.
