Ron Sun leads the Open Experts at Mulkey m ot ocross.
Lane, Michletsch,
Sun shine at
Mulkey
By Ac tion Oz
McMINNVILLE, OR, MAY 7
With weathe r t he exact opposite
of their opener, Mulkey Park
presented a perfect , sunshiny
Sunday fo r a motocross eve nt.
A large crowd of kn obbies turned
up for tec h ins pectio n, so m any that
,the d ay's progra m got underwa y on e
hour behind schedu le. A full p rogram
wit h all classes ha d a field day
romping a round t he dry d irt , a ra rity
that has to ca use eu p horia amon g the
d irt folk.
When th e firs t 125cc Pro moto came
off th e lin e a nd the dust cleared , Tim
Michletsch (Ya m) was in the lead . It
turned out to be a lead th at was never
headed as ,Tim took th e first event. A
c halle nge was mounted by Troy Folck
on a borrowed bike , but to no avail.
Kevin Lane (Suz) came up to push ,
but ran out of time , and J eff Cropper
made a valiant bid by the fourth lap ,
but had to sett le for fourt h after he
was passed by J im Anderson (Suz).
The second rnoto was a different .
story. Lane got t he holeshot and went
for the win. Troy Folck had his
borrowed bike dialed and began to
press . Tim Michl etsch , who was
running th ird at th e end of th e second
lap . m ade a move, and passed Folck.
Jeff Cropper wristed his Su zuki up to
th ird by lap five .
Michl etseh dropped off the pace ,
letting Folck back into second, then
finally dropped ou t with a m echanical
problem. Folck was into seco nd to
stay. An derson pushed int o th ird and
Cropper had to sett le for fou rth a nd a
4 -4 d ay. Lane took th e 125cc overa ll
with a 2-1. Ande rson ended thi rd and
Brian Hall fifth .
Tim Michletsch likes to win , so with
a fresh 250cc b ike, he was ready. Mike
Kinnear (H us) too k the lead a t the
start a nd was mo ving well; he ra n two
laps in the lead wh en he pulled to th e
sid e to chec k his b ike . ' Skeet Hise
(Yam) blast ed b y a nd tried to stretc h
his lead. Michl etsch had othe r idea s
and dogged H ise . The ra ce to th e flag
was a thriller as T im passed Skeet on
th e last la p to take th e flag wit h H ise
pickin g up second: Les Womak (Ya m )
got th ird a nd Kinnear managed
fou rth .
The seco nd 250cc Pro moto saw
Kevin J ens en ge t th e holeshot a nd spi n
off like he was on a no the r track. No
one got nea r him and he raced to th e
flag . Mea nwh ile . t he action behind
him was ho t and hea vy as Michlet sch
kn ew he had to have a second for first
overall . He chased Kin nea r an d Stev e
Williams, got by them , then went aft er
W omak. It was not u n til the sevent h
hip that he caught him, then made th e
pass a nd held it to the flag. T his ga ve
him a 1-2 d ay and the overall win .
Jensen had a 4 -1 day. for second , whil e
Womak tallied a 6·3 for th ird . Fourth
was pic ked up by Kinnear.
Ron Sun matched the weathe r with
his Husky and made it a Sun -day with
a pe rfect I -I. T he only rider to stay
halfwa y wit h Sun was John W elch
(Yam) . Sun took th e lead in bot h
motos a nd ra iled his wa y to the fla g .
Kim Williams (Ya m ) ro un ded out th e
top th ree.
