CALlFO'RNIA CITY. CA. MAY 28
Enduro Riders Association held
their second enduro in the club's
existence over the Memorial Day
weekend with only a slight rider
22
turnout. : Three
hundred
ride rs
converged on the California City
desert, with the scorching 100 degree
weather causing a lot of the avid
enduro rid ers to choose other means of
rec rea tion .
The
overall
and
sweepsta kes winner was Mike Taylor . a
200cc Beginner , who rod e all three
loops and d id not drop one second! H is
overall score was 0.00 . Believe it or
not , the two loop winner was a
woman , Joyce Rob inson rid ing in th e
200cc Women's cla ss. Loop one
winner went to a Min i rider, Bob
Rose.
The main purpose of form ing a club
suc h as ERA , is to give the ch ildren
and wives a real chance to compete in
an end u ro. Many three loop rid ers
thought the th ird loop was not very
challenging, but the reason for thi s
was to test the riders on th eir
timekeeping skills. The promoters of
the event stated that ERA enduros ar e
mainly for children . wives and riders
who need a life-like situation to
practice their timekeeping procedures.
For Mike Taylor, his skills ar e sharp
enough.
The three loops totalled about 60
m iles with loop one being 13 miles and
loop two . 16 miles. Besides th e usu al
sandwashes and dry , dusty trails. ERA
incorporated
some
slap-happy
sections. There was a hare and houndportion that was reall y mil es of
whoopdies a nd a motocross section
that had hairpin turns and jumps.
Here is the breakdown of all three
loop riders that were first in th eir cla ss:
Tom King of UEA fame won the 250cc
Experienced-over 40 class ; Mark
Tennison received the honors for th e
250cc Experienced class : Ron Taylor
won t he Open Experienced with James
Thomson taking the 200 Experienced.
The Open Novice class was won by
Dennis Weber: 250cc Beginner cla ss
by Lance Guilfoyle and Susan Thomas
rode with the men to gain th e first spot
in the 200c c Novice for three loopers.
One interesting not e. Harry God et
drove all the way from Lompoc , CA .
rode three loops , dropped onl y 21
seconds and he is 64 years old! That's
out sta ndi ng.
The overall weekend was good . The
weather was a little hot but th e endu ro
ended before th e real heat set in. For
ERA . their enduro was organi zed in
fin e fashion and for Mike Taylor and
th e other 300 rid ers , we all fin ished in
fin e fash ion .

ONTARI O , CA, MAY 28
Over the Memorial Day weekend
Pat Manning organized a road
race. utilizing the long course at
O nt ario . Even if only 167 riders
sho wed up. it was a very comptetive
day for most of the classes .
Especially for the 250c;c GP class ,
where Mark Homchick had a fantastic
race from start to finish . He grabbed
the lead from Mike Bead er on tum
six during the second lap. ahead of the
J ohn Gidney (Specialist II) , Bill Henry.
D. Lee and Bob Hyman battle fOT
fou rth place . On the third lap, Baeder
was out and Homchick cruised for the
rest of the race until Joh n Gid ney
started catching him. Hyman passed
Lee. and took third by only three bike
lengths.
In 350cc/500cc/ Open GP. it was
almost the same story. but this time
Expert Harry Klinzmann
took the
command of that race ahead of
Baeder , Billy Addington . and Chuck
Pa rm e. On the second lap Baeder was
out, Gil Martin took the second spo i
and Chuck Parrne passed Bill y
Addington. They remained in that
order until the checkered flag . Barry
Elliot took the 350cc GP win and John
Gidney the 500cc.
The battle between Chuck Parme
and Billy Addington took place once
again in the four -stroke GP race .
where Addington led the race. after
passing Parme on the first lap. for four
laps. Parme repassed him and won .
Whit Blakeslee, who was running
th ird on a Ducati 900 Desmo from
Champion Motorcycles, ran out of gas
on the sixth lap. leaving that place to
Don Gorak on a Kawasaki.
Another rider experienced a
misjudgment in the consumption of
gas d u r ing the 500ccl750cc/Super
Cafe race. Danny Coe , astride a
Yamaha RD4 00 from Specialists II,
was running second behind Steve
Sowden and his Kawasaki KZ 1000
a nd could have passed him if Sowden
didn't block him in every turn . Coe
was losing four seconds a lap because
of th at, and ran out of gas on the
seventh la p of the nine -lap race.
Danny told a reporter after the race ,
"We were running three jet sizes
richer, and didn't expect to consume
that much ." On the same lap. Steve
Schrader on a 500 Yoshima Honda •
.. ... . . ......... ... . "'.

took the lead over Steve Sowden; Carry
Keoshgerian was third.
Whitney Blakeslee and Lee
Flemming battled together in the
Open Production and Box Stock races.
with
Blakeslee winning both .
Champion Motorcycles fr om Costa
Mesa was spo nsoring the Box Stock
race an d offering cash to the winners.
The next Pat Manning race will
take place a t Riversid e on June 25 .
