Alan Chrisian, the man who curren tly is ho lding down the second spot in the points race, earned a ride in both ma ins. He finished seco nd to Oxley in the Handicap and took fourth in the Scratch. Mike Bast , the crowned King of Speedway, won the Scratch Ma in event over Bob by Schwartz. the guy who keeps saying to Mike, "W a tch out , it's my turn!" Bobby's been in thirteen of fourteen Main events and is still looking for his first win . J im La wson topped the Third Division ha lf of the show with a fine ride off the zero-yard line . Guess who aced Ascot By Dennis Greene GA R DENA . CA ,JUNE 1 So far this year, there is only one na me in the record book under the heading "Scra tch Main event winners on the Y4 ·Mile at Ascot. " That name , of c ourse , is Mike Bast. Three in a row for Mike , even with a left wrist that was so swollen he could not com pete in the Handicap Main. Mike pulled off th e win again over Bobby Schwartz. The bigger tracks have a lways been hard on Mike's wrist that was shattered a few years back in a speedway crash. Even with a specia l brace, the long ro ugh track makes it swell to the point that he cannot close his fingers a ro und the handlebars. Larry Kosta , last week 's star on the high school -built Speedway bike, rode that bike to third place in both the Handicap and Scratch Main events. The top spot in th e Handicap Main went to Dave Sims with a super ride from the fifty- yard line, getting by Frank Adamo and Larry Kosta . Sims, too , know s th e pain of a bad wrist. It 's just a yea r since he got his wrist caught in the rea r wheel and , despite all the talk of po ssibly removing his hand, now except for the scar, one would never know . Ascot is the biggest of the three tracks running in the SoCa l u nder the NSL. If'- you have seen speedway on the small ovals and wonder what it could be like if the guys were turned loose on a big track , you can find out an y Thursday night at Ascot. No gold ring for Christian at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA , CA ,JUNE2 Close , but no gold ring . Alan Christia n had won every race he was in all night, including the Handicap Main Event. He was working on a clean sweep of the program , someth ing that only happens three or four times a yea r, but when all things are equal on the Scratch line and Mike Bast is there. you might just as well think about what you will do with the second pl ace money. , Mike will be the first to admit tha t '1 with the talent of Schwartz, Christian , ~ Sigalos, Sim s, Nutter and a half dozen ., more , he is having to ride a lot harder to stay in from than in yea rs pa st . Mike is th e current U.S. National o Spee dway Ghamp and has earned the title five times in the past nine years.
