Sunny skies and high temperatures' made the racing doubly hot while spectators and pit crews shed their clothes (well, ID:0st of them) to keep from sweating to death . 14 While many riders were present to do battle (includi ng perennial desert rider John McCown and Kook ie III ). some of the heavy -duty desert aces were conspicuously absent. includ ing Larry Roeseler, Bruce Ogilvie and Dennis Greene who were down south pre-running next week's Baja event. Their absence gave other riders a chance to catch up on points. Mike Six be rry rode his Crown Cycles Yamaha 400 to take a blaz ing. but clos e .win over Maieo pilot Chuck Pettigrew in Sunday's climacti c Open . ' Amateur/Expert event. Earlier in the day, P. Christensen did it to the 250cc Amateur /Experts. The Hi-Siders chopped ou t a rugged four -m ile -plus course out of the Racing World terrain, creating on e "easy" circui t for the Novice classes and a g narly one fo r the Open Amateur/Experts . Including rocks, ru ts, u phills and ridge-running fire roa ds. bot h courses ha d a 15-foot killer jum p abou t a th ird of th e way a round that sent m an y r id ers on Saturda y skyhigh with no trouble at all if th ey had any ' kind of speed behind them . Fortunately, there ~ere on ly a couple of get -offs here , with one Sportsman cla ss rider getting sent to the hosp ital for eating on e too many rocks when he ! took th e big' d ive. The only other~ interesting crash was when two l sidehackers, attempting to climb up one hillside trail, had their rig tumble I back on them . Even though t he pa ssenger go t ta ngled in the crash. nobody was hurt. Even though the ) track was doused with liberal doses of~ water, some secitons remained dusty. j Mid-afternoon winds managed to handle that problem. l The first 75 -m inute race to ge t , underway on Sa turday was th e sma llbore Beginners and Novices at 9 a.m . G. Woodling was the overall winner. followed b y T . Willis and J . Langhammer . The smallbore Amateur/Expert race that follow ed ] was captured by Steve Wiseman after an intense duel with Bob Rutten , who finished second overall. K.
