Sketchy reports from the Isle of Man indicate that American Pat Hennen crashed in the Senior n. suffered head injuries and is i,n a hospital on the 10M. Mike Hailwood. riding Ducati. set a new lap record on his way to winning the Formula One n . John Fero rode his IT250 Yamaha to earn the best overall score at the Trask Mountain M.C .'sJune 3-4 AMA ISDT Qualifier in McMinnville, OR. Fero's 1081 score topped PE250 Suzuk i rider Tom Penton's '1090 for 250cc class laurels as well as the overa ll. Open class winner Frank Gallo scored a 1093 Lackeymania. a popular emotional condition caused by the sincere belief that Brad Lackey could win the Bel-Ray USGP of Motocross. was prevalent everywhere around Carlsbad. The folks at this EanhCraft store played it to the hilt with a wooden "Go Lackey USA" sign. a motorcycle wire sculpture and a Honda mirror. all sold within. Jaak Van Velthoven and Andre Malherba showed up for the Bel-Ray USGP on all-new 420cc KTMs complete with sandcast motor parts. "The wheels and tank are about the only thing that's the same." American KTM rider Frank Stacy said . After completing the Tresk Mountain Two-Day. Barry Higgins convinced the organizers of a local pro MX that since he needed the money to get home. he should be allowed to enter. The Open class ran late enough in the program that he could finish the two-day. then 'ride the same cycle - complete ' w it h lights and all - in the motocross. He finished f'lfth and. we assume. now can afford to go home. At th e weigh -in and sound testing for the Bel-Ray USGP of Motocross , He ikki Mikkola's winning ' Yamaha checked in at 222 lbs. and read out 109 dB (A) on th e decibel meter . The lightest bike of the meet was four-time USGP winner Gerrit Wolsink's works Suzuki with a weight of 216 lb .• only eight oz. lighter than teammate Roge r DeCoseer's. H ea vyweight " hon ors" went to Rex Sta ten's Bassett Ra cing Products Yamaha at 242 lb. Quietest m a ch in e la urels go to Ha kan Andersson's H usky. Frank Sta cy's KT M and the Yam ah as of Rick Burgett and top American Mike Bell, all at 104 dB (A) rea dings. Noisiest, at 110 dB (A). was Ken Adams' Maico. Kawasaki riders Gaylon Mosier and Jimmy Weinen reced in the USGP under special dispensation since Mosier normally rides a 125cc Kwacker in AMA National competition and Weinen is signed up for the 260cc class under the 78 AMA rule that prohibits riders from competing in more than one displacement category. Thus. neither was given an official finishing position. Gaylon. however. would have finished eighth overall by placing 9-16. He dropped from sixth to 16th in the second moto after a rear shock problem developed. The 'Jammer DNF the first moto with breke problems. then scored an 11th in round two. a placing that would have tied him with Graham Noyce at 21st. Kawasaki's 500cc class ride r, T exan Steve Stackable, passed up the USGP un der doctor's orders, Stack twa nged his knee at the Texas 500cc National on the previous weekend; it remains to be seen whether he'll be abl e to race the next series event at Sean Point. The call was received one week prior to the series' opening round In Texas. and according to Darrell's dad Orv. they turned Fox down bacause Darrell had already put their series plans together. and he felt obligated for the series to his sponsors. Malco. Rancho Cordova Suzuki and HI-Point West. Fox also stated that they wanted to get back In touch for the Trans-AMA Series in Septembar.
