West German Herbert Schmitz tied Mikkola on moto scores; lost on time. Mikkola ponders an ABC Wide World of Sports quest ion asked by Bruce Jenner. put his Can-Am in fifth overall with a 10-8 . Tommy Croft rode his Honda to a 9-10 sixth overall ahead of KTM rider Frank Stacy's 12-11 sevent h . Hakan Andersson , .Brad Lackey and Roger DeCoster completed the top 10 overall with ,13-13. Tea m Hond a was out in force and dom inated the two 20 -minute-plus two-lap mo tos, bu t Darrell Sh ul tz brought his privateer Maico out for Rancho Cord ova Suzuki a nd Hi-Point West to keep the big red fact ory on its toes. r As the pack sho t off the line the first moto, Honda -mounted Dave T aylor grabbed his "usual" holeshot, but was quickly passed by Honda's j immy Ellis. Rover DeCoster crashed in the second moto trying to ride with a sticking throttle. The crash caused.DeCoster's retirement from that moto; his first moto second put him at 10th overall. ) Gary Semics 117 battled with Rex Staten_over seventh place in the second rnoto. Sta ten took it. but a seizure in the first moto kept him off the leaderboard. Semics' 10-8 score got him a fifth overall. Warren Reid and Shultz were d icing for , th ird as Texan Rickey Blackwell rode fifth . At the halfway point. Ellis was holding the lead , Shultz fought desperately to hold back Reid , and Taylor had settled into fourth . Then. all hell broke loose. Ellis threw his chain . dropped back to third . set up . another pass on Reid . then threw it again ; Schultz was left in command, but .T ea rn Ho nda wanted the win as Reid pressured down to the wire. As the duo p ulled Ellis 'over t he last ridge, the mad dash for the checkers left Reid two feet shor t of the win . Shultz took the moto with Ellis. T aylor and Jeff Jennings round ing out the top five. As the second mo to smacked the gate , Taylor again grabbed the lead until Chuck Sun took command. Reid was there along with Shultz. but Ellis got caught back in seventh. Capta in Cobalt put on a charge th at was ca p tu red. in th e words on the blackboard of his father/wrench George: "Must win ." It took until la p five. wher e Ellis passed Reid a nd Shultz. Reid was now left in the ' pressure position. If he took the lead. th e over all was his. But if he allow ed Shultz to slide by, he would get stuck in third overall. When the white flag waved . it was every man for hi mself among the top three. The trio ra n neck and neck as Shultz set up his pass on Reid . At the bottom of the do wnhill, Da rrell went for it , He pulled beside the factory Ho nda, hit th e turn and in a cloud of dust found himself pulling weeds off to the side of the track . He quickly remounted in third , but th e IwO Hondas were too far out front to make another challenge . As th ey crossed the lin e. Ellis took th e win with Reid seco nd . Sun had passed Shultz before th cy crested th e drop -off 10 tak e th ird. Fifth went 10 factory Suzuki pil ot Mark Barnet t. In th e overalls. Ellis took first with Reid second . Shultz third.
