Some people get all the breaks By Jan Newman PORT LA N D , OR , MA Y 18 Everybody has had bad da ys. but did you ever have one of those bad days? Ever know anyone who has more than their share of that? Steve Phillips is turning out to be that kind of guy. 'Twas less than a year ago. June 2~. when Steve got the holeshot in the second moto of the 250cc Pros at Delta Park. As he hit the first berm it gave way and he went down with his leg under his bike. There were all those other guys behind him, and when it was all over Steve came out with a compound fractu re of the leg. It was one of those break s which promp ts the big m ed ic a l men to almost a utomatica lly a nnou nce t hat "you may lose the leg ." In the insult to injury department, after finally co nvincing the hosp ital crew not to cut off his b ran d new leathers. a nd going th rou gh the ago ny of having them removed over the badly d a maged leg . the lea thers mys te riously disappeared. never to be see n again. Steve's leg slowly mended albeit a lit tle bent. He looked forward to a summer of loca l racing in prepa ra tion for hitting the trail in the Trans·AMA support class. After that he would go for some corrective su rgery on the leg . He had ridden a co uple of times at other tracks. b ut Thursday was his first time back out at Delta Park. one of his favorite tracks. In the first 250cc Pro m oto he was not in the front of the pack. but riding steady when the last lap flag came out. On the back of the course there was a rider down in the bog. As Steve tried to motor around him , Dave Didier came at him from the side. Steve recalled his front wheel washing out a little. then finding himself and his bike outside the fence with a big blank in the mi ddle. He did note, however . a seve re burning sensation in his leg. He re broke the same leg in t he sa me place. T he corrective su rgery will come a lot sooner than pl anned . Next week . as a m atter of fact. If you've got a spare card or word of enc ouragement . m ail it to Steve at 5428 S. W . 65 th, Po rt land . O re . 97221. Meanwhile . the ot her 17 250 cc Pros put on a real show for the la rger than normal cr owd on a balm y evening. Jerry Pillar (Yam) won the first moto after p assing Reid Goldmann (Hon) in t he early laps. Ba rney Newman (Mon) and C lay Azar (Ya m) st a cked up behind Reid . looking for a ho le which never came. Clay did find a spot to get around Ba rney in the fin al turn. Moto two was a parade of Tim Michlitsch , Newman and Pillar all the way. Jim Anderson (Suz) led all the way in the first I25cc Pro moto. Cla y Azar (Ya m) worked up through the troops to wind up second. Jim took the lea d from Sco tt Isbell (Suz) for the second win while Clay was trying to repeat his performance behind him. With two laps to go . Clay and Kevin Lane got in a ta ngle over second place and both lost ou t. Clay's ~ras h p ut h im out of the 250cc an d Open classes also . In the first Open race he had given Ba rn ey Newm an (Mo n) a wire- to ·wire run for t he lead. W ith Clay out. Newm a n had an easier run for the second win .
