In the first round of , action , Danny Jean (Suz) and Bill Ovelette (Yam) shot into the lead , leaving Burgess 10 make up for a less than perfect start . By lap five, however, Burgess had overtaken Ovel lette and was pressuring Jean for the lead. Jean, who just got back after a long tim e out of the racing scene , wasn't about to give up with out a fight. The two riders wer e bumping handlebars in t he corners and trading pa int in the straights for the rest of the race. On the 10th lap, Burgess took over the lead. Jean began to tire an d he remained in second for the rest of th e race. Ovellette got th ird and Bill Pelto(Yam) cam e in a distant fourth. In th e next bout , Burgess got .the holeshot and then took off. O velette was his main competition th is time a nd th e two of th em were never more than four bike lengths a pa rt . J ean was stu ck in b ack of th e pack after a poor fi rst la p , b u t before long he was cha lle nging Pelto for thi rd. At the half-way po int . th e order was Burgess a nd Ovel let re a few seco n ds ahead of Pelt o and Jea n . Danny Burtt (Su z) held down a solid fifth . It was on la p ten that Jea n fina lly got a ro u nd Pelto , but by then , t he two leaders were long go ne. The over all standings were id entical to the last rnoto finishings . The 125cc Exp ert class saw t h e return of R ick Stout (DG) an old time favorite at DeAnza , who won both motos over Thad Fr iday (Suz) and Marc McClure (Suz). The Open Beginner class was taken by 12 -year·old Eddie Michetti . Michetti was mounted on his father's Ma ico which was so tall that he couldn't even climb on it without a milk crate to step on. In spite of his obvious handicap , Michetti put in an impressive ride. to capture all three motos . Kenny Austin and Randy Smith, both on Suzukis, got second and third . Results 100 BEG: 1.
