"Pain week" begins at San Bernardino By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDINO, CA , MAY 24 20 A painful week of speedway raeing began Wednesday night at . San Be.rnardmo where a !talf d_oz~n riders fell by the wayside, ... The parade started when Danny Becker punched a hole in . the crash wall and came to a qu ick stop on the handlebars. The sudden stop put him in the grandstands for the night . Then came Sonny Nutter and Ron Preston, who both went down but returned to competition. Bob McLain got knocked down in every race, and by the end of the ?ight he was having trouble just movmg around . The only bad pile-up of the night _put Ron Preston in the hospital with a concussion. He ran into th e rear wheel of a slower bike and was pitched over the bars head first int o the ground . . With all the pile-ups, it's hard to say it was a good night of racing. But it most assuredly was a great race meet. Mike Muntean finally earned his way into the Scratch Main event. It ended up being a three -man go when Sonny Nutter broke the tapes and was sent to the pits. At the start , Mike Bast went to the front while Bobby Schwartz and Mike Muntean ran neck and neck for the -second spo t. Bast won and Muntean just nosed out Schwartz. Last week in the Handicap Main event, Don Faulkner won the event from the 10-yard line. Don found himself in the same winners' circle again this week after th e five-lap event. Two wins in a row should move him back to the 20-yard line. This is to his advantage because the only 'way a rider can get a Scratch ride is to be a winner from at least the 30 yard line in Handicap Racing. Mike Bloom won the Division Two Main event, just one more rider who has worked his way up through Junior Speedway.
