Cycle Guid e Need to know now I would like to comment about th e; Cycle Guid e m ag azine people who wrote i ~ a bou t th e lack of coverage of the AFM Six-Hou r Road Race. VOICES Loose nut at Ascot I am wri ting thi s letter to "th ank" who mever loosened th e lug nuts on all four wheels of m y car a t th e Ascot Na tiona l Half Mile . I was parked wher e all th e van s and rid er veh icles park behind th e pits. I'm the AMA Dist rict 37 tech inspect or for profession al ra cing . I was in ch arge of sou nd tes ting. doi ng m y job ac cor ding to AMA rul es. a nd I ha d to call some of th e sound test readings pretty close . If I ca used any ha rd feelings , I'm sorry , but I had a jo b to do. I know most of the rid ers und er stand my situ ation , and I'm gratefu l for th eir understanding and su pport . FRANK VARELA AMA 0 ·37 tech inspector Garden Gr ove, CA That p articul ar issue covered a co nsidera b le number of d irt events, involving fa r fewer pa rti cipants, in mu ch greater d eta il. I suggest y!>u remember th e fa ct that you do have a number of su bscribers and ad vert isers who are int erested in pavem ent racing . As you sta ted , you r coverage was timely and bri ef. Especiall y brief. I th ink th ose of us who hav e su ppo rted you deserv e better. And I think that professionals like Art and J eff deserv e better. It may be fun for you to compose cu te answers to th e letters you receive. like th e gu ys a t Car & Driver, but Art and Jeffs letter was written out of co nc ern for all of th e good people involved in th e Six -Hour ra ce . So was thi s one . MARK FULTON Pal o Alto , CA Smart-ass? I ha ve to ta ke exception to your sm a rt -ass answ er to Art Friedman a nd J eff Ka rr's lett er protesting your min im a l coverage of the AFM SixHour ra ce a t Onta rio . Th e answer was int ended to be neith er -smart -ass nor cute. Mark . A s sta ted, the AFM Six -H our did deserve more coverage; it could not be gioen it due to space limitations; we will be What a shock J a y La cey's letter was for me! I have never claimed (or pretended ) to be th e first wom an to ea rn a professional licens e fro m th AMA , and I ha ve been very careful to correct a nyo ne who mi su nderstood that I was. I am th e first woman to b licens ed as a professional roadracer onl y - nothing more. But th is was not sufficie n tly em p hasized in th e article . and m a ny of m y statement s the refor a p pe ar to be in acc u rate when no understood to be within th e context 0 ro a d raci ng rather than mot or cycl racing in ge ne ra l. Diane Co x, Debbie Evans. and Su Fish , have been m y idols since before I ever th ou ght about a pplyi ng for a professional license , a nd my adm iration for wh at th ey ha v accomplished in motor cycl co m pe titio n is measureless. Not to mention th e efforts of Debbie Sheldon and Kerry Kleid wh o found the goi ng much rougher than a nyo ne else a nd made it possible for wom en to com pet in AMA sa nctioned events. Had it no been for the perseverance of rhes ladies , it would have been mu ch mor diffi cult for riders like Margo King , W en d y Epstein , Virgina Bovaird a n m yself to acq u ire th e professional . licens es we now hold . Please don 't co ndem n me for th wa y I ha ve been pa ckaged a nd sold to you in th e med ia . I a m not t rying to b a nyt hing mor e th an a respected ra ce who se accom plish me n ts (howeve sm a ll) m ay be used to fu rt he r the spo rt of . motorcycling a nd mot or cycl ra cm g .
