Team Honda rider Brad Lackey scored a solid 2-2 second place with Andre Malherbe third, Graham Noyce fourth and Roger DeCoster fifth . Mikkola leads the 500cc World Championship MX Series point standings with 132 points over Lackey's 116, DeCoster's 67 and Malherbe's 66 . Suzuki's Akira Watanabe and Yamaha's Gerard Rond eech took a moto win and a second placing at the May 21 125cc World Championship MX Series round in Czechoslovakia. No tie-breaking time figures were available at presstime to determine an overall winner, however, Watanabe took the series point lead from Suzuki teammate Gaston Rahler. Watanabe holds a slim one-point series lead - 140 to 139 - as the series heads for Yugoslavia next weak. Third in the point standings is Rond with 133. KTM·mounted Frank Gallo put in the best ride of the weekend at the May 20-21 found of the AMA ISDT Qualifier Series in Washington, MI. The event , put on by the Bentwheels Competition M.C. , saw Gallo better second placer 250cc class winner Jack Pe?ton, also KTM ·mounted, by 53 points: 2267 to 2321. Tops in the 125cc class was Husqvarna rider Steve Whitworth with a 2601. Suzuki's Don Cichocki won the 175cc class with a 2400 . Jeff Smith put his Can -Am on top of the 350cc class with a 2523 total. Open and 250cc wins were Gallo's and Jack Penton's. U.S. riders fared well in the 'May 21 Speedway Team Competition at Reading, England placing third behind the ACU/British and the ACC/Australian squads before a crowd of 12.000 fans. England won handily with a 43-polnt total as Australia and the Yankees battled over second, eventually winding up 21 to 20 in favor of the Aussles. Scott Autrey scored best on the American team with nine points; Steve Gresham and Mike Curoso took four each; Bruce Penhall totalled three. Kenny Lewis Jr. was the apparent winner of the AMA D·37 Greenhorn Enduro, put on by the Pasadena M.C . After 340 miles and six tiebreaker checks, Lewis lost only 15 seconds. We heard that promoter Mike Goodwin has raised the pu'rse money for the June 24 Coca-Cola Superbowl of Motocross by 55% to make it the biggest paying event to date on the AMAlToyota Supercross Series. By strange coincidence, thera are $6 tickets 1$3 for kidsl at Ticketron and Mutual ticket agencies and 'Honda dealers, making it the least expensive major AMA race on the West Coast to see. Amateur riders will have a chance to try out the Coca-Cola Superbowl of Motocross (Note from Papa to Goodwin: Can't you shorten the title a bit?) in the L.A. Coliseum. There'll be a Grand National Championship race in the Coliseum on Monday. June 26, two days after the Supercross, Qualifying races are set to begin immediately; get in touch with promoter Jerry Surber for information at 713/482-7593. That 713 area code is correct; Surber lives in Texas. Marland Whaley has parted company with Honda and signed a two and a half year contract with the Montesa factory. "Honda didn't want to go to Europe," said Whaley, who will continue to ride the Honda In local events until the U.S. round of the World Trials Championship In Pennsylvania on June 11, where he'll make his debut on the Montesa. Whaley will ride the remaining events on the World Championship circuit. after the U.S. round. Diane Blauer and Dawn Grant will be teaming up on a 250 Husqvarna to ride the 430-mile Baja Internacional June 9. with support from Torco and Malcolm Smith.
