Both riders crossed the finish line com pletely unchallenged as the rough 10 and sandy Motocross 338 track in Southwick put their opposition out of contention. No one was more disappointed than Team Suzu ki's Ma rk Ba rn ett . He watched from the side of the track as his previous week's lead in the 125cc class point standings over reigning champion Broc Glover took a nosedive . Ba rn ett 's RA Suzuki suc ked sand in through the ai r filter element , sa ndi ng down the pisto n and rings in both morns u ntil it woul d n't even run . The sa nd monster struck in the 250cc class as well, wit h its victim being Honda's Ma rty Tripes, the on ly rider capable of stopping Bob "Hurricane" Hannah's reign in that class, Tripes had the lead over H anna h in both motos when Tripes' production CR250R died on the side of the track from sand in ha la tion . The expected battle between the two young stars never materialized, except for an instant at the beginning of the second moto when they were involved in a fantastic six -way battle for the lead which included Chuck Sun, Rich Eierstedt , Pierre Karsmakers and Jimmy Ellis . The clash went on for six crowd -roaring laps before it resolved itse lf with Marty breaking away from the pack . first ahead of Bob. There was some doubt even in H an n ah's mind if he would be able to catch T ripes , but the Honda 's dyi ng engi ne helped decide t he ma tt er. Fo r the time being , the u nr esolved d uel between ' H anna h a nd Tripes on the outdoor National tracks for th e past two weeks remains to be settled . Bu t it will have to be postponed while the series takes a break. Meanwhile, the Toyota Supercross Series feud will be renewed , this coming weeke nd in Pittsburg h . It will be there that Hannah will tr y to destroy Tripes' slim three point lead in the Supercross sta nd ings. 125cc National It was clearly Broc Glover's day as he dialed the Jim Felt-prepared OW36 works Yamaha to runaway wins in both motos. Barnett- should have stayed home, because he was destined to lose his points lead no matter what. Before his engines destroyed themselves on sand in both motes , Mark got off with last place starts due to a first turn crash in moto one and a fouled plug in the second. The start of the first race saw a lot of fresh talent up front as David Taylor kep t his Suzu ki ahead of Bro c for half the moto. J ust behind them , youngsters Brian Myerscough and Jeff Ward were giving Warren Reid and Gaylor Mosier a battle. It was only a spill by Taylor t hat allowed Broc to get finally around , take over the lead and the win, In th e seco nd moto , it was Mosier a nd Myerscou gh be nding ha nd lebars over the lead during the opening la ps as Glover slowly eased up behind . Only when the two bogged their engi nes' on the track's big sand uphill was Glover able to use his momentum to an advantage in ta king the lead. Trading paint over fourt h spot were LOP's Marty Moates and Da n ny "Magoo" Chandler on his BJ Suzuki . T he heated fight moved Marty all the way up to second spot behind Broc at the finish. Moates' chance for a good overall score though , was ruined by a fouled plug in the first mota . Insteadi t was Gaylon Mosier pulling off second overall with his Rocky Williams-tu ned KXI25 Kawasaki factory bike. 250cc National ~ Marty Tripes was angry. This week marked the second in a row he had to push his way back to the pits allowing the Hurricane an easy romp to victory. " Not hing is resolved yet. It won't be until Hannah and I get to race an entire mota together side-by-side. Then we'll see who's best, " said Tripes. Marty wasn't the on ly one having problems. Honda Teamster Jim Pomero y split his exhaust pipe in' a first moto crash, causing his Hond a rlo run lea n and eventually seize. Kawasak i's Jammer , Jim Weinert , was a top contender both motos u nt il fi~ t a n a t tire and then a leaki ng head gasket p ut him out. Hel ping to provide most of the show were R ich Eierstedt , Chuck Sun, J im Ellis and Pie rre Ka rsma kers, It was Pierre who put the best combination of motos together to garner seco nd overall on his Yamaha to back up H a nn a h's IO·straight National moto winning streak.
