T he finish was a ca rbon copy of the first two a nd after the race, Hobbs p ulled around a nd picked up his first -p lace trophy and Novic e rankin g . T he 250cc Novic e class was a close one. CA , A PR . 26 T orrey Pines High Sc hoo l rider David Ger ig was the ou tsta ndi ng rider of the night at Speedway 117 in th e Coca Cola Sa n Diego H igh Schoo l C hampionship Series wit h a big win over Ma rt y Tri pes in the 250c c Pro class . Gerig ran a close second to Tri pes in the first moto a nd came bac k to sco re a co nvinci ng win in th e second m ot o as Tripes 'sett led for a t hird be hind hard -riding Mike McG owan . Aft er com ing from fift h to first in th e first mot o , Trip es seem ed co nt ent 10 stay back in the pack aga in in the second rnoto , bu t regul a rs Gerig and McGowa n refused to be int imida ted a nd ra n off from him . As a ma tt er of fact , new Pro Cli n t H a rd ick almos t got T ripes for third at t he ch eckered flag . Spea ki ng of Ha rdi ck . who was mak ing his firs t start as a Pro last W ed nesd av , he seeme d a litt le " tight" off th e li~ e but on ce th e raci ng to underway he seemed to settle d own and showed some real grea t rid ing in both th e 125 and 250cc events an d picked up a third overa ll in th e 125s. The 125cc Pro class featured a complete domina tion by Mike T ripes who seems to win every time he appears a t Speedw ay 117. With Hardick moving ou t of th e Int ermed ia tes. a real do nny brook was ' expected by the fa ns and they were not disappointed as EI Capi ta n rider Kei th Finc h too k th e 125cc Int ermed ia te class wit h a third a nd a fou rt h p lace finis h over young Woody Carlson who put toget he r a 6-2 for second overa ll. Red -hot T racy McMillan took his second stra igh t 500 cc J uni or win and looked 10 be a two straig hte r in the r 125s again until th e scoo ter ga ve up in the seco nd moto wit h a 50 -yard lead on th e last lap . Defendi ng cham pion Santana H ig h appears to have a two -straight effort goi ng for it in th e 1978 Co ca Co la / San Diego Se ries, bu t a real batt le for th e second a nd third places .betw een four schools is emcrging now . The 125cc Pros got the first sho t at th e dusty track . FMF Su zuki-riding T im Lunde was off first a nd go ing for th e go ld . Dea l' J ocic (Co le Bros.) had th e seco nd slot. Suzuki of Pom on a rider Pau l T he de, J a ck Keese. and Terry She kell fo llowed. Lunde was ab le 10 hold th e lead for th ree laps but a bu sted throttl e cable put him ou t. By th is p oint in the race , Shekell had moved in to th e number one slot , wh er e he stay ed for t he rest of the race.
