The Handicap Main was won by Tom Morley , the young son of Stu Morley. a past speedway great. Dennis Sigalos, also a member of the Sizzlers team. has a large following . His win in the final event of the night , the Scratch Main . brought the fans running to the pits for autographs. It was an all local victory and a super wa y to start . the new ra ce season. Berzerko Becker back! By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA , CA . MAY 5 Locals rule at San Berdoo By Dennis Greene SAN BERNA RDINO . CA. MAY 3 22 There was a standing room only crowd by 8 p.m. Wednesday night at San Bern ardino for the opening night of the 1978 Speedway season. Ron Presto n , a team member of the old San Bernardino Sizzlers Speedway team. is a local hero . When it was announced that he 'was in the Feature Match Race. a fan put up $100 if Ron beat Gene Woods in the two-lap sprint. His sponsor. The Red Fox . p ut up th e money and Ron won t he event as the fans went wild. He also worked his way jnto both Main Events but did not fare as well. In the Handicap Main Event. after a restart when Brad Oxley and Dave Galvin piled up in turn one. Preston had minor bike trouble and had to be With the return of Dan Becker , it's like turning the cloc k back t hree full years. Just men tion his nickname (Berzerko), and fans will tell you about the time he came into the turn SO fast he had both wheels on the crash wall and won the race riding the wall . Or the time he went four laps to victory on the rear wheel. Or t he time . . . And then there was . . , Sto ries do grow in size as time goes by, but t he truth is that Becker is back. Da nn y "Berzerko" Becker, doing wheelies and riding the walls , earned a ride in the Scratch Main Event. Although he finished last , he did put on a show that overshadowed the victory of Alan Christian. Steve 1<: Nutter , who was hurt In the Consolation event last week, ran 111 second to Christian with Bo b by Schwartz keeping out in front of Becker for third.
