DG's Wild Wi lly Sim on s rod e h is heart ou t in both motos of the 250cc International, and it pa id off a t th e end of the day . T aking th e holesh ot of the first moto was Carlos Serrano . but he went wide in th e first turn a nd th en foul ed-a -plug. Jeff Vidic slip ped his Ma ico under for the lead. J ose Marin fought a losin g battle fo r t h ird as Su zuki W est 's Gary Dent on , An d y Jannin gs, W illy Sim ons and Dave Haugh set out in a dash for t he ' fro nt . By th e th ird lap , Dent on was in second a nd Simon s had m otored into third , bot h closin g on Vidic, As t he trio went aro und th e fifth tim e, Denton and Vid ic were .sid e -by-side as t hey crested th e big gorge jump on th e back straight. Denton put on a radical mov e in th e tight left turn following and took the lead away from Vidic. Denton's reign as leader was extremely shor t as he got off on th e sa me lap , dropping to fou rth behind Haugh . Vidic again ran in fro nt, but next on th e list of harassers was Sim ons. Willy put a move on J eff for the lead , and it stuc k. H augh and Denton were doin g th e sa me thing for thi rd with Dave stick in g his move for thi rd. As th e pa ck ca me aroun d for th e last lap . positi on s looked stable. Simons, Vidic , H augh th en Denton ca me around, but collec ting th e check ers was not th esam e. ' Simons held for the win , b ut Vid ic . with j ust a half-lap to go . came to a sudden hal t. H e rip ped t he gas line off 10 chec k fuel. and that wasn't the problem. Next came off t he spark pl ug wire , and that d idn't cu re a nythi ng. Disgu sted , Vid ic wa lked the bike ac ross the line a nd out of the m on ey. Electrica l problems were t he ca use . H augh picked u p second as Denton moved up to third, and coming ou t of midpa ck was Sh erman Schnelle.r, wh o picked up fourth as he pushed lit tle by little to the fron t. Marin co llected fift h, top Mexican . II Off th e lin e th e second tim e came a ragll'1g Serra n o. The Ari zon an pulled int o a com mandi ng lead .by the sixt h lap , a fte r Ga ry Dent on experie nced his own "Daytona Supercr oss" incident in Mexico. Dent on grabbed the holesho t a nd early lead , but wh en trying 10 la p a slower rider on the fifth lap, Dent on was forced dow n and of f the tra ck. Serra no 's lea d was also short -lived as he fou led another plug . After th e race he found ou t wh y th e spa rkers were go ing so qui ck . T he owner of the bike was runnin g Bel R ay, a 50 to I pre m ix and higher. a t l 5 to 1. On th e 10th lap , Simons had m oved from fourth place to th e lead , with a spu rt that ca rried him past Haugh . T his duo was battlin g for th e overa ll win, but Simon s was too pumped to let go of anythin g . W hen the checkers flew , Sim ons ro lled across to one of th e biggest wins in his career with H augh seco nd . Denton h ad charged a fte r his fall and was right on H augh at the line , but had to settle for third ahead of Vid ic and Schneller . Overall s wen t Sim on s. Denton , Haugh, Schneller and J ose Marin .
