For the rest of the field in co nsiste ncy and bad luck kept the moto scores jumbled but the racing close. Bart Batson took third in th e first mota bu t crashed in the final mota on the Texas Yamaha . Phil Yarborough (Pen) re turned 10 Expert action slugging his way to fourth in the first race , but dropped from th e overall after a flat tire in the final. Clint Ward (Texas Yam) retired from the first m oto but gallantly returned for third mo~ey position in the last m o to , beating R ussell Palmer (Yam), whos e chances for a better overall finish were ended with a first rnoto crash. The 125cc Intermediate class was typically chaotic both i~ the r~~ing and the shuffling of finish posinon. Above a ll, Brent Fletcher maintained with two seconds for th e overall victory . Brent was us ually at or near the fro nt a nd avo ided problems whi le establishing a fast pace. Chris Christoph won the first mota but couldn't pass Fletcher in the final and lost the first overall. Quiet but fast Phil Giles ' slipped out front 10 claim th e final moto and third overall. Former minibiker Phil Hoke realized he co u ld handle the 125 cc machines effectively, and stormed up towards the front in th e later laps after two ca utio us starts. Stev e Shelburne stayed with th e leaders In bo th moros of the 125cc Novice class, taking third in each moto and turned ou t good enough for fir st ove ra ll. Mota winners Linda Barnes, knocked down starting the final , a nd Corey N evers still managed fourth a nd fifth overall despite their bad lu ck . Ray Lackey won both motos of th e 125cc Beginner class wh ile his closest challenger Kelley Turner had to battle his way to the front in the final race 10 claim runner-up. Ricky ' Glaser ran off with both motos of the 250cc Intermed ia te con test and Jeff Wi lson likewise in th e Open Intermediate races. Ji m Barnes finished second to G laser in the 250cc race, but showed his mastery in t he Over 30 class , sweep ing both motos . from flag to flag . Robert Hereford brought out his new Maico , impressively fini shing seco nd to Wilson's Yamaha In the Open class and adding a third overall in the Over 30 class. Darrell White ca me sto rming up like a madman at the conclusion of both Senior Mini motos to claim second each race and ended u p first overall after mota winners Todd King crashed in the final rnoto and David Shea rer had bike problems and neither co ul d get their act together consistently. Gary Tidwell a nd Richa rd Si m mons turned in fine rides for second a nd thi rd overall. Richie H ull lost the first moto of the Mini J unior moto by inches 10 usually. dominant Ro bert Groover. Hull was so furious at himself that he vowed to upset Groover in the final and he did, racing off to a five-second lead at the checkered to earn first place. Resu lts in Resul ts Section. Howard, Giles grab .Rio Night MX By Mike Reilly HOUSTON , TX , MAR . 31 Despite the fact that a large and com petitive field of local ta~ent suffering from " Fr id ay Nlg~t Fever" assembled for Rio Bravo s night motocross, the racing was cha rac te rized by one- rider domin a tio n in each of th e 10 cl asses. Five of the cla sses were no contest , the wm ner sweeping both rnotos , a nd t he o t her winner s scoring o ne mota WIn and threatening in their second ra ce. Greg Howard thrashed a st rong 20 rider field in the 250·0pen Expert class aboard his Vandiver Cycles -Bel Ray Maico , proving that th e form er su persta r of H ou ston motocross is b ack for real. Picking off his teammate Charlie Brown halfway through the . first moto , Greg outdistanced the field for a convincing win . In the final moto, Howard was fighting his way to the front after a poor sta rt and , while running four.th , collided with Dan Co nway, sending both rid ers to the ground . With ha lf the m oto gone and suddenly in the back of the pack , ' Howard began a banza i charge relentlessly overtaking the other riders, finishing second at the checkered flag within range of the moto winner Cl int Ward (Texas Yam) . Besides the brilliance of Howard's performance, other highlights o~ ~he night's racing included th e surpnsIng challenge by Charlie Brown on the second Vandiver's Cycle Maico. Proving to himself and his competitors that he is ca pab le of winning Expert motocross , Brown was within one lap of grabbing second overall behind Howard . Taking both ho lesh ots with ease, Cha rl ie was passed by G reg and then held off the more experienced Rick Weir (Amsoil Suz) for second in the first moto, and on the final lap of the last moto slipped d own , dropping him to third overall in th e standings. Rick Weir was second ove ra ll and Dan Conway (A.J. Fo yt .Suz) got fou rt h , neither rider enj oying the go od sta rt s and ea rl y leads cha racteri stic of th eir racing. While th e name riders had disappointing nights in the 125cc Expert cl ass , newcomer Phil Giles used th e opportunity to collect some money with a rnoto win and first overall. Earning both ho leshots , Giles co uld not . be caught In the first mota , escaping from t he pack and stretching his lead on his Weisco Suzuki in the smooth and unhurried manner he is kn own for. In the final moto , favorites Dan Conway (A.J. Foyt Su z) and Mickey Pizzitola (Amsoil Su z) got their act together, finishing one-two with Phil staying right with them for third, but assuring first overall. Bra d Burks was in range of the overall win unti l a crash in the final race dropped him to sevent h and fourth ove rall . All three Intermediate races were one rider domi na ted, with Jason Savage winning both motos of ~he 125cc division , Ricky Glaser sweepIng the 250cc class and Tim Ca ud le tops in both races of the Open class. Craig Ra ym o nd , who owns the m inicycle class on this track , broug~t out his trusty Yamaha to assure his title and proceeded ro win both races. Steve Plentl and Chris Russell dominated 125cc Amateur racing, Steve win ning Group A and Chris B. Both riders used excellent starts and no -mistake riding to hold off their pursuers. Jerry Surber made the final transition from m inicycle racing to larger motocrossers a successfu l on e , sweeping the 100 cc class over regulars Randy Jackson and SCOll Wright.
