Williams was right out in front with J im Lowe (Mai -L&L Cycle ) close behind. Williams immediately made his intentions clear by pulling away . Back in third place, Don Simonian (Suz) was having a close battle with David Aleman (Yam). Every lap the Suzuki and Yamaha would come by within inches of one another. With Williams and Lowe way out in front, this was the best dice going on the track . Simonian held down the position for nine laps , then Aleman's pressure got to him. As they crossed the finish line, the order was Williams, Lowe, Aleman. Simonian, Doug Heil (Suz) and Greg Stone (Yam). The next race was more of the same. Williams and Lowe going away while the rest of the pack fought over third place. This time it was a battle between Aleman and Heil with Simonian having difficulties and falling back. The order of the final moto and the overall results went Williams, Lowe , Aleman and Heil , In the 250cc class. Williams did it again . The first moto couldn't hav e gone smoother for him . He led the race all th e wa y and finished with five lapped riders between himself and second place Tag Turner (Ma i). The second race, however. wasn 't quite so easy. Steve Davis . who crashed his Honda in the first moto, grabbed th e holeshot and held on to it. Williams was about fifth off the line. but by the fourth lap he had passed everyone but Davis . It took him a while to catch the Honda rider. but when he did it started a close and exciting match . They traded wheels and bumped handlebars in every tum , but Davis held on to his lead . It came down to the very last lap. In a dari ng move just before th e;: checkered n ag , W illiams managed to get around Davis and win the race. The top five in the final standings were Williams. Turner, Davis. Tom Karos (Suz) and David Hopkins (Hus) . In the 250cc Novice class , the center of attention was Kim Palmer (Suz) . who just returned to racing after almost a year out of the saddle. In the first round . he squeezed out 22 other riders in the first turn and wen t on to bu ild up a big lead. It all went to waste, however, when his chain came off halfway through the race. Palmer managed to get it back on in time to save sixth place. The win went to David Figueroa (Hon) followed by Kelly McGuire and Doug Yarnell. In the next two motos. Palmer came back with power to spare . He pulled a convincing lead in both motos and rook the overall win. Yarnell was second with McGuire third . Resu lts in Resul ts Section . Haugh tops Strauss in AME MX action By Judy Greenberg VALENCIA , CA. APR . 23 Dave Haugh won top money in the 250cc Pro class after an im pressive two -more battle with Hal Strauss (Hus) , during America n Motocross Enterprises' motocross action Sunday a t Indian Dunes. The 250cc Pros fir ed off th e lin e with Haugh and his Cole Bros . Maico in command of th e first moto . Rodney Morrison and Andy J annings ravaged the course in a duel of Hondas , with Jannings forging into second by th e third lap. Willy Simons (DG) made some quick moves through the pack to reach Jannings. Once taking over second. Simons pulled to a stop with mechanical problems, and left the race, soon to settle for a super pa ir of wins for the 125cc Pros. While Jannings was using the sand to his advantage in closing the gap on Haugh, Ha l Str auss broke away from a battle for third with Don Dixo n (Yam) and Morrison . Without much warning, Strauss appeared on Jannings' .ra il, and after fighting tooth and nail through the roughness of the wash . made a mid -air pass exiting the sand past the tower. Haugh was starting 10 stretch his lead when Strauss exploded int o the loop and Hal Strauss takes t he lead during AME 250cc Pro racing . Strauss wound up, second behind Dave Haugh at t he Dunes event. '0-1 closed in the last lap . When Haugh momentarily went sideways , Strauss mov ed in front , taking the nag with Haugh on his neck . Jannings crossed with Dixon and Nick Hale (Mai) close behind. By the third lap of the second rnoto. Haugh and Strauss were at it again. It was the Maico and Husky, nip and tuck through wash and track . Despite the constant pressure from Strauss, Haugh stayed in front to end the rnoto. Jannings, who sewed up third early. finished behind Strauss followed by Dean Perry and Dixon. . The Minicycle Division joined the day's event , with some fine racing in all classes. Cindy Dumo took back-to back win s in the 105cc Mini Open . Marc Condon grabbed second away from Eddie Green. whil e Omar Greco . soared through heavy traffic to put Condon back in third at t he fini sh . Eddie Green (Suz. Spr . Center) took cont ro l th e second tim e out . but was passed by Dumo in front of th e lower. Green had second snatched away by Greco , but wasn 't about to give up third to Jey Sapp as th ey headed to the fini sh . Br ook Bolsradt led th e 100cc MOIOTVclce classes to win both motos in hi; first rid e as an Expert. Nick Athans , who rook back-to-hack wins in the I25cc Intermediates. finished second in the first rnoto . John Langhammer (Shoemakers) and Roy Gomez (Verdugo Suz ) swapped moto wins for the 100cc Intermediates. with tight racing as they exchanged leads in the first moto to Langhammer's favor. Gomez came back strong 10 win t he second moto a nd the overall. Results in Result s Section . 8ell blasts SSMMX By Terry Whytal ORANGE. CA , APR . 15 Team Yamaha's Mike Bell totally domina ted both 250cc Pro motos at this week 's Saturday Saddl back Motocross. Promoter Jim Be1tinck jokingly commented that Bell was "cherry picking and he would hne to move up a class next time." As Bell jumped to the front of the first 250cc Pro race, the battle became heated for -second spot. Chappy Blose and Bob Blose , both on Ho ndas, began a day-long battle for second with Tim Tolar on a SUZUKi th reatening from fourth. Bob finally took the checkers ahead of Chappy , making the finis hing order Bell, BlOse and Blose . Just as the second moto was lea ving the starting gate, a light rain began to fall . The track surface soon became very slippery and many riders fell. Bell didn't seem to mind as he again began lapping at a terrific pace and took the win with a large lead over second. Tlie Blose brothers went at it for runner·up money again with Bob coming ouron top and Chappy getting a well deserved third . Overall finishing order was Mike Bell first . Bob Blose second and Chappy Blose third . By this time the track conditions wer.. terrible and the rain was really coming down. A big hand should go to the score keepers doing their best under impossible circumstances and to Diane for laboriously tabulating the results from almost unreadable 'a p sheets. Some of the races had to have th'e second rnotos cancelled and the results may not be from both motos, But the race went something like this: Bill McLean, riding a Maieo, won both 500cc Pro motos , wit h Val Tamietti (Mai) finishing in second and Jeff Witherell (Mai) rou nd ing out rhe top three. T he 125cc Pro class was won b y Tony Gomez on a Yamaha . The runner-up spot went to Cliff Lett (Yam) and third place was earned by Ted Hoyt (Yam) . ~ Honda rider Dave Arnold took the overall 250cc Intermediate win with a 5 · I score. Second place went to
