Ron Haase and his 250cc Honda
took the lead on .the third lap of
the Expert-Am ateur Pro race and
won hands down at CRe's W ild

sa ndy straightaway to the first tum,
Ripping through tum one wide open
was desert ace Cordis Brooks. Beh ind
Cordis was a mass of hard-charging
riders jo ckeying-for position.
Aft er going through the first two a nd
one -half mil es of fast sandwash , t he
course ca me on to the Internation al
moto rcro ss co urse.

Haase a nd Dean Taylor. Taylor (Ma n)
moved past Haase on lap two and int o
the lea d on lap three when Brooks
sta lled . Taylor lost it on th e motocross
portion of t he co urse and Haase took
the lead , That's where he staye d.
Morgan Malocco (IT 400) nearly
fell over on th e front tire-straddle start
and was on e of the last riders off th e
line. Tom Brooks (400 Mai) , however,
managed to tip over and was dead last
off the lin e . This did not discourage
either rider as they managed to move
in to th e top 10 in the first four la ps ,
Malocco had it dialed on and found
himself running sixth.
Taylor contacted a flat rear tire and
was out of the run ning for .the lead
with Mike Shoemaker moving int o
Malocco · out -powered
second .
Shoemaker on th e seventh lap to take
over second for the first tim e. Jeff Blix
( 125 Su z) was tearing up the track , as
well as th e com peti tion , as he was on
his way to a class win on his AI Bakersponsored machine.
One lap from the finish , Tom
Brooks had moved all th e way up to
sixth behind Ron Gibson (400 KTM)
but dropped out because of too many
neutrals in his trans ,
When the checkered flag fell , it was
Ron Haase all by himse lf with
Ma locco , C. Brooks. Gibson. and
Shoemaker picking up overall honors,
with Blix taking first smallbore.
First Amateur was Doug Hurt (Suz)
a nd no soo ne r did he fin ish than his
bike ran out of ga s,
First race of the day saw Gary Schell
(400 Yam) p u lling the holeshot over
Leon Pri ce 1400 Yam ). It appeared as
though Sch ell wou ld be the easy
winner as he slowly increased his lead
to a bout one hundred ya rds over
Price.
Ab out 20 m inutes into the race it
looked like Schell was getting tired a nd
Price was ready to strike, After both
rid ers excha nged th e lead a few tim es,
Price finally got firm co nt ro l to take
th e win with Schell a close seco nd.

made up th e second race . J ack Pfate
led mo st of the way with charges from
J eff Heth (Suz) , Steve H asert (Ya m)
and Scott Hubble (Ya m) ,

after. Robin Bu sse ( Ya m) to ta lly
domi nated th e class as he ope ned up a
huge lead at th e finish, Lori Farmer

win on her Steve's Bultaco .
In race five, Jim Donaldson (400
Yam) came on rea I strong in th e
closing stages of th e race , but was
un able to catch Bill Edringt on (400
Yam) for th e win , Edrington had a
- goo d- sized lea d most of th e wa y,
The fin a l ra ce was th e team ra ce,
Cordis Brooks, teamed with brother
Tom , tackled th e tough field by
ju m p ing into an ea rly lead with
Ironman Bill Pickard (250 Suz) right
with them a ll th e way, Tom was
making qu ite a showing a fter almost a
one yea r layoff.
When th e battle was co m p leted ,
Tom and Cordis Bro oks had brought
their Wheelsm ith Ma ico across the
fin ish line first ahead of Bill Pickard.

Overcoming dust , rocks, and a
bad start, plus doing some gutsy
riding. Cory Timms took th e
overall win of th e Simi Vall ey
M.C . AMA 0 ·37 hare scram bles.
At 10 a .rn . sharp , th e Simi Club
sta rted th e race a nd th e bikes headed
for th e right side of the g ra y kn oll
below th e Seales, Hooking a left ,
dropping down int o th e narrow ,
smooth sa nd was h , Br ad Hens on
p rop elled by a scream ing YZ250E, had
a 100 -ya rd lead on second place , firs t
Am a teur Lee Sch effers.
The next b ike to bol t pa st the
overhanging pu ckers was Bill Tarling ,
t hen heavy favorite Bob Ba lentine ,
Chuck Miller, a nd first Trai l Expert
Francis Christensen took seco nd in the 250cc Se nior Expert class at the
Sim i V alley M ,C, AMA D-37 hare scrambles.
Kevin Hopkins, Zig.zagging ever
higher into the mount ains, Ed Zarp
got by Yamaha 's Ch arlie Hami ll and
set his sights on th e H usky-m ounted
Cory Tim ms. Ga ry Charters a nd Craig
Harris cha nged positions severa l times
before t he racers clea red t he ca nyo n ,
hit the nea t d ou ble j u m p th en headed
into th e fun ' bu t tricky ridge run
portion .
Chuck Pettigrew on his Wheelsmith
Mai co ta ilgated T imms through th e
barre n, one bike tra il sec tion toward
th e end of th e Searles ra nge . Two
bik es blasting down thi s sect io n were
Eric McCracken and Gregg Thomas,
Both racers goi ng very fast. Kern Park ,
Ron Bebo and Bill Sal tzman saw th e
two bikes disappear. Making a qui ck
righ t hander , th e th ree racers
d isa p pe ared a lso, down th e lon g , lon g ,
sa ndy d ownhill : wit h plenty of vu lt u re type spec ta to rs at t he bott om j ust in
case some thing neat happened like a
su personie getoff.
Crossing the Searl es Va lley over
some new territory, some int eresting
th ings began to develop. Henson
relinquished his lea d to Pettigrew and
Balent in e d ue to some con vulsive
tankslappers th at p itc hed th e su pe r
racer over the bars. Standing up
unhurt . he watched Chuck and Boh
blast by_Closing in on Pettigrew ,
Balentin e's flat tir e demon stru ck
again .
In th e Tra ilbike cla ss, J oe Lockhart
on his Lecki ch- tuned b ike needed all
the tuning he co uld get. He had Kevin
Hopkins in sig ht but cou ld n't close the
gap. Two finer Trailbike riders can
not he found . The Trail Amateurs had
a sim ila r du el. Leader Cl iff Thomas
pulled OUI a ll th e tricks he kn ew bUI he
just co u ld n't shake th e vastl y.
