Several ri ders who rode new or rework ed bikes last time did wor k d urin g the brea k and go t rid of bugs. O ne of th em was Tom Anderso n , on a T T 500 Yamaha . Sta n H ickey and Don Taylor both showed up o n newly-ac q ui red T ri um p hs. Hickey's 750 needed a few adj ustme nts but he still looked good . Taylor too k a stock 650 a nd really looked good on it. Times over t he 400-foot Mineral W ells hill were close a ll day. After a d isa p p oint ing first run of 17 :5 seconds, David Card er and his 250 Bultaco fou nd the groove a nd blasted over the.hill in 13:98 seco nds , to come wi thin . 1 second of Wi ll Alfo rd 's' Bultaco . Resu lts in Resu lts Section . 500cc class. Tom Anderson decided to ru n his 500 SC Yamaha there a nd jump the new TT to the 750cc cla ss. Hen ry Polley a nd his SC jumped out to an early lead with ' a time of 13:74 seconds, but late in t he firs t round Anderson ca me back with a run of 13:45 seconds. It was beginni ng to look like t he SC was going to capture top tim e a lso. Polley didn't like the lineu p though. He straightened 'ou t the hill a little with a run of 13:27 seconds, whi le An derson was having tro u b le the second tim e up . An derson and Polley met again in th e 750cc class. Anderson had trou ble on the first run with his T T500 . Polley's run in the 500 cc class got Anderson's adrenali ne flowing . He found the straightest , smoothest line to the top and was th e on ly rider all day to break int o the 12s. His time of 12:91 seconds p ut t h e press ure on the Triumphs. Polley had some handli ng prob lems wit h his 750 Tri ump h and could not bea t his firs t time of 13:73 . Exhibition rid ers had no better luc k a nd Anderson's TT too k home the top time win . Bigge r ' co u nter-shaft. sprockets and la rger m a in jets were the orde r of t he day . Most of t he spectators were ga thered at a cre ek crossi ng tha t was approximately 30 yards lon g and composed of wat er and m a ny white , chalky rocks of vari ou s shapes and sizes. It was a lot of fu n to watch the racers cross . but it was a different story if you were on the bike tryi ng to ride the slippery creek. As the Pro cl ass ca m e off t he starting ' line , Tom Hollister on h is Ya ma ha got the jump but faded fast. Bruce H a llmark, a 16-yea r -ol d , on his 250 Honda , reeled him in and was soon far in t he lead. Ha llmark was never seriously challenged for the lead until he sto pped for gas. Af ter his Marx Brothers -style pi t stop , he was soon back at the hea d of the pack. Second place was ta ken by Charl es Pelt on on his Husky. Pelton mi gh t have bee n a ble to cha lle nge , but he had a bad case of the fa ll-do wns . Billy Sm ith (Hon) an d Ra nd y Whi te (Yam) were th ird and fou rt h . Phi l Oliver , on a new R M400 Su zuki , was t he b ig b ike ove rall winner. O liver , ra ci ng in t he Open Exp ert class whi ch started on e minute be hi nd the Pro class , ac tua lly finished th e race 15 seconds 'soon er than Ha llmark, the winner of t he Pro class . Following Oliv er to the finis h lin e were Gary Gunn (H us) , Ga ry c h a n d le r (Hus) and J ohn Paynt er (Ya m) . Tony Br uce was th e sm a ll b ike overa ll winner on his YZI25 Yamaha. Bruce is back tr ying to defend his tit le as th e over a ll points champion of last year. Trai ling Br uce to the finish lin e in the 125cc Expert class wer e Ba rry , Stevens (H us), Jo el White (Yam) and And y Clevland (Ya m) . T he 250c c Expert class was won for the second week in a row by H arold Kendrick on a YZ250 Yamaha . Wayne Gree n (H us) finis hed in 'second pla ce. Gree n caught L arry Langley and his RM 250 Suzuki on the last corner of th e last la p . Fourth place wen t to Gera ld Ti me on a Ma ico . In the 200cc Expert class, Mike Eads took th e win on his H usk y. T on y Ru cker and Jerry W alk er, both on ITI 75 Yama h as, raced wheel- to-w heel t h rou gh out th e r a ce , wi t h Ru cke r edgi ng ou t W alk er for seco nd place ~ Milton Kirchmeier took fourth place' for th e fina l trophy spot. Old men in the Over 30 Expert class pu t on some of th e best racing of th day. Du ring the entire seven la ps of the race, the lea d was consta nt ly being traded back a nd forth between Phil Crain e (Yam) , Bob "Superma n" Polpe (H us) and Ron Lane (KTM) . T he victory finally went to Cra ine wit h Pope and La ne righ t on his rear wheel. In Open A ma te ur, a va riet y of m achinery paraded across the finish line to ta ke trophies. First p lace was Rocky Shelt on on his Husky. Wendell H annum (Kaw) was second . Br a d H ent zen (Ho n) and Da vid T ufte (Ya m) were thi rd and fourt h. T he 250 and 200c c Ama teur classes were do mina ted by Yamahas . O u t of l eig ht troph ies going to the two classesq th e Yarn ahas too k seven. Leading th _ parade in th e 200cc class was Ra Y) McGee. H e was fo llowed by Leon Ki rc h meier, Bill McDo na ld a nd J imm y Bing ham , a ll on Ya ma has. Da vid No land (Yam ) too k th e first place brass in the 250c c class . Ti m Coch ran (Yam ) took seco nd followe by Allen Little on a Suzuki. Af ter Littl e broke the Yama ha monopoly Ph illip Alb ri tton (Ya m ) ro u nded out th e 250c c Amateur class . T he 125 a nd 100cc Ama teu r classe rounded out th e action in the sma ll bike Amateur class es. Action in these classes was not qui te as fast as th bigger bikes but it was just as fu rious .
