John To w nse nd exploded off the line on top in the first moto with Staten in hot pursuit. As Roeseler headed for his second la p , problems st ruck and he was o ut. Staten took over the lead with a tenacious Ken Morgan riding on his pipe and a match race was on, due to a mistake by Paul Sedler that dropped him way back. From there on out it was all Staten and try though he did , Morgan was no match for the Rocket and had to settle for second, The pro blems that sidelined bo th Roesele r and Sed ler proved to be insurmountable, so it was Sta ten a nd Morgan who again took 10 th e line to do batt le. Staten had clear sa iling a nd it was a wire- to- wire romp for the Ba ssett -sp on sored Yam ah a r id er. Mor gan was seco nd a nd Sedler pi cked up third . T he 250cc Pros sa w th e return of J ohn Silva a nd his R in con Kaw asak i "green m eanie. " Silva b las ted off th e line in th e first m o to ahead of Willard Co nstr uc tion's Dennis Rose a nd Ma rk R a wle y, ridi ng fo r G ra ha m Sh ee t Meta l. By th e second la p Rawley had put a move on Rose to take ove r second and Rose found J o n ny Clopton knocking on the door. Cl op to n didn't gel around as easi ly as Ra wley did bUI by lap four he was sitting a solid third . The race belonged to Si lva with Rawley and Clopton in the IWO, th ree spots. The second moto again saw Silva with a super start but this lime it was Rick Cavish who locked in behind him with Clopton third. Clopton moved quickly on Cavish and had second by lap two . Silva was not 10 be denied this week and Clopton and Cavish could do nothing mo re tha n fo llow him home . The overa ll was clearlv Silva's wi th Clopton second and 'R a wley third . Phil Thorstensen, who had a sure 125cc Pro win snatched away last week when he threw a chain in the first moto , p layed it a bit more conservatively th is wee k a nd it paid off. The first rn o t o ac tio n started wit h Dave Rose brea king o n top and Steve Shippy in second . Joe P r ice was running a close third with Thorstenson in fourth . Rose made a COSi ly mistake on the second la p and found himself at the bottom of the heap with Shippy the new leader. Thorstensen moved o n Price the next lap and a lmost got sell led into second but Price had other ideas and on the white flag la p he had rega ined the seco nd spot. T'horstensen fo ught back and as the checkered came out he was there be hi nd Shippy. In the second moro. Rose again got the jump on the field with Sh ippy and P r ice right there wit h him and Thorstensen second. Price was on his way and nothing Slopped him as he brought it on home with Thorstensen behind him . Shippy was t h ir d . T horstenscn's 2·2 was good eno ug h to take the win in a tie breaker with Ship py who had a 1·3. One POiOl back a nd thir d was Price . Hardick, on ly about two races away fro m a Pro transfer , had his ASA Racing Eng, prepared Ho ndas in front again for every lap as he easily swept both the 125 and 250c<, classes on a track that was as dry this week as it had been wet the week before. Speaking of the Pros, all classes were hot ly co ntested . The outstan ding effort wen t to Da vid Gerig (Suz) who again pic ked up a first in the 250s a nd a second in t he 500cc beh ind Chris Chaffee (Yam) . Chaffee sco red his second straight win, an d certa in ly has learned th e win ning fo rm u la ea rly in his career: "Get in front q uic k, a nd stay there!" T he youngest Pro in CMC history, 13·year .old R ick J ohnson m ad e his firs t appearance of the 1978 season , a nd a fter a banzai run fo r seco nd in t he first 125cc moto , the Broc Glover protege had trouble on the dry/slick co urse in the second round and settled for third behind Marty Moates and SCOll Anderson .
