Riders surged to the tra ck in bounteous numbers. no t affected by rememb r ances of past m ud-encrusted m ot os, Mother Na ture dea lt a cool, but su n ny day, a nd afew stagnant pools of lef t-over rai n were soo n churned into soft la nd ing pads by 200 scooters. Seventeen 250cc Experts lined u p , ea ch expecting 10 do a sp ri ng clean-up of their own, but R a n d y Sargent (Yam) mowed 'em a ll into the ground . "Rambunctious Randy" rode like an aggressive, hopped- up bulldozer and determinedly dogged Mik e O 'Driscol l (Yam) with repeated efforts of dethronement . They exchanged a hot potato lead until Mike high-sided a berm , leaving Ra nd y with the tater and the bread. Mike bounced up just in tim e to rescue his spot from the clutches of John Ar chuleta (Ya m) and crossed the checkers in second. with . "j a mmin' Joh n" hot on his tai l for th ird . • A top Idaho rider, Gary Ra nd all , almost upset Eldon Copier (Suz) , on e of Utah's best. i,{ the 125cc Exper t class. They j uggled the lead un t il Eldon drew the upper hand, leaving Gary wit h seco nd place . ' " Movin ' Mi ke " O 'Driscoll (Yam ) ho leshot th e Open Expert moto and p lowed a very evident hot line for Gary Randa ll (Hus) to fo llow . Garv's intentions weren't to stay behind in tlte rut, but when he made his a tt em pt to pass, the H usk y gave up and died . Pet e Watson (Ya m) had difficulties coming o.ff th e I ~ n e . , but. patiently zapped n~ers .unl1 l he d gamed a spot behind MIke. Watson 's main object ive was to p lant Mike in a furrow , bu t the c hec kers impeded his purpose and Mike retai ned a first. A 'tag , you 're it' tussle between Neil Crosby (Suz) and Bo b T homas (Suz) explod ed in the 100cc Novice class . Nei l co uld n't find th e rpms to trounce Bob in the stra ights , but he co u ld cut hi m. out in t he corners.. The lon g stra igh t before the checkers was Neil's undoing and Bob shot through for a first while Neil took second . T en trophies were given in th e 125c c Novice class and Kelly Stewart (Yam) overcame the pack and took first. Murra y Archibald (Suz) and Brent Kunz (Su z) skirm ished for second. with Mu rray emerging the vict or and Brent zoomi ng in for a close th ird . J ohn Turner (Su z) grabbed first place trophyin th e 250cc Novice class . Bret Hutchings too k second and Kell y So~enson was rew arded a thi rd b y pomts. Rich Gill ett (Yam) , Open Nov ice. ca lml y rode off with first place fin ishes in a ll three moros a nd snatc hed th e w e~l -earn ed trophy . Denny Burke fini shed fifth , but poi nts gave him a trophy for se cond , whi le L yn n LanderM erwe (Suz) cert ified a trop hy for third . N ick Ewi';g (Yam). 125cc Ama te ur sn a tc hed the lea d awa y fro m Scott Ra nd all (Yam) and flew away wit h first. Scott was b umped arou nd by Dave Matt hews and Keith Bothers. but held on to second. A m ighty battle eru p ted between Jerry Bitt le (Ya m ) and Kell y Smith (H us) in the 250cc Amateur moto . They haggled over front position until LODl ..OAKDALE. CA , AP R. 8 & 9 San J oaq uin Valley Distric t 36 short track racing got down to serious business last wee kend as the Lodi and Westside Eagles Motorcycl e Clubs st aged excellent events at the Lodi Cycle Bowl and Pio neer Arena . Racing was close a nd excit ing on two well -p rep ared race tra cks. Several Min i ri ders e xperie nced successfu l point week end s. Experts Dou g C handler , Ch ris Ca rr and Bru ce J ohnson moved steadily up the plate list. Carr won his first 80cc main eve nt at L od i in a flawles s ba ttl e with C h a nd ler , which saw both riders wheel-to-wheel for the e n tire eight laps . Chandler returned to battle Joe Kn igh t for the 100cc Expert victory . - Johnson , ' not rid ing too much t his season. doubled Sunday with an 80cc win and a third in the 100cc main , while Chandler and Carr swep t the first two sp ots in th e 1OOcc go . Novi ce Allen Knight continued to dominate the 80cc class with wins both races whi le J un iors Dwight Linch and Shaun Reyna gunned to 80cc firsts on respective days . Sportsman co m pe titi o n m arked outstanding performances by Novices . Mark Key and Mike Hayward, and the usu al Expert crew. Key chased Tracy Ha ys in the heat both events a nd then dialed the start both m a ins to grab t he l25cc wins . Mark shou ld be ver y close to Junior points. Haywa rd wa s greeted. follow ing his 200cc Novice mai n Satu rday, wit h a new card for Su nd ay a nd went a head to win. th e combi ned race a lso t hat day . Mike will m ove to the 250cc ra nks next wee k. Alex J orge nse n and J e ff H a ne y swapped 250cc Expert wins over th e course co m petition . Alex easi ly won Lodi wit h l B-yea r -ol d J im Felice turning in a strong seco nd . Haney , on the bubble fro m two Pro Nov ice wins at Ascot and Tulare , jumped out front Little 'C hris Carr t oo k his f irst Lodi sh ort track win Saturday at t he Cy cle Bowl. at Pio nee r for the first. J orgy chased . but dicing in the pack took too m uch time for him to catch "t he jet. " Valley R a cing Associat ion Go ld Plate competition ti ghtened consid era bly. J orgy and Chandler are comfort ab ly ou t fr ont , but J ohn Tavis and Kim Jorgensen moved up by virtue of suc cess thi s weekend . Chris Carr also ju m ped from com pletely off the list to third . Thin gs were go ing grea t until a wa te r pipe broke while pre p a ring t he track . A bit of sa nd tu rned t ha t pro blem in to a bog, but around four o'cloc k , the skies opened up to po ur out steady rai n . Openin g of the gates was d elayed .for nea rl y an ho u r , waiting for a break , in the clo uds . None came but the gates o pe ned anyway on condition that no rain checks would be issued. Once inside, a number of riders opted to become spectators . This included one of the best "m ud ders" in the na tion. Those who rode found it wasn 't all that bad . Some of>the smaller bikes had trouble in t he bog, but some of the big bikes did too . Ba rney Newman (Ma n) became the
