When th e Amateurs went off the
line . Bill Lyon s was nowhere to be
see n . It seems he was taking a nap and
by the time he go t to th e gate he was a
la p down. Ra y Sanchez put his

fin ish . Do n J en sen and Chuck W ood y
had th eir own littl e war going fo r

finish , but W oody held him off fo r a
second in the moro a nd a third ove ra ll.
A third in th e m oto put Jensen in a tie
with Sanch ez for fir st overa ll, so
Sanchez got th e b ig trophy by virtue of
his better fin ish.
In th e Novi ce windup , Joe Br ay
pulled me off th e lin e , as he usually
does and that 's th e way we finished :

If we had all owned boats we
could have had a bitchin boat
race today, instead the bikes and
riders slogged through what was
left of the terrain at Continental Motosports Club's Carlsbad Racewa y
motocross.
Open Pro riders were the first to try
and motor around the much altered
and shortened track. Yamaha -riding
Chris Chaffee was off first with
"Rocket Rex" Staten on his Bassett
Yamaha second. Two more Yamaha
pilots had the three/four slots: Mark
Rodman and Steve Walker. Up -Tire
Husqvarna -sponsored Alan Smith had
one place on David Gerig (OP Suz).
Wes Sutton (Cole Bros. ) and Jeff
Witherell (Mai) followed. Chaffee led
Staten until the third lap when Staten
swooped by for what was to be an
unreal lead . Rodman was third ahead
of Smith's Husky with Walker and th e
problem -plagued Chaffee next. Smith
moved into second on the fourth lap
and rode right behind Staten for the
rest of the 14-lap mota . Chaffee wa s
making good time in his assault on th..
front two riders when he landed too
hard after one of the muddy ju m ps
and the chain was completely wound
up and jammed into the front
sprocket. Gerig took over as the third place rider with W itherell and Randy
Rodriguez (Ma i) advancing in the lin e up. On the last lap the leaders were
Staten , Smith, Gerig, Witherell and
Rodriguez.
Wes Sutton took the holesho t in the
second mota with Gerig and Smith
rig ht on his knobby. Bill Jewell and hi s
Krisroph Franz , Mo ta Meister -tuned
mount was ahead of the wide open
mach ine ' of Witherell .
R an d y
Rodrigu ez and Mai co-r'iding Bo b
Maxwell were next in the parade of
riders . Staten was la st after he was
invo lved in a pileup on the fir st turn
and got started way behind the o ther
riders. The Bassett Berserko wasted no
time. On the fourth la p Rex moved
hims elf into third . Gerig had be en the
leader since th e end of the first lap and
was fighting off Smith , wh o in turn
had his hands fu ll with St aten . Sm ith
