Chuck Sun (8) passed Rich Eierstedt (20) at the Hangtown mudhole early in the second25Occ moto. Sun wrapped up fourth overall with a 9-3 score, . Mark Barnett (24) gets a bit radical holding off persistent Jeff Ward (336) in the opening round of the AMAIMr. PiBB 125cc National Championship MX Series. • Kent Howerton does some of his magic tricks as Jeff Jacobson watches. Howerton, second at Hangtown, goes fast - stylishly. 8 Howerton was hot. and he proved it by skittering past three riders in the next two laps and slipping in behind Zahrt for third place. On the next lap, he zapped Zahrt. . By then , Hannah had built _ p an u -incred ible 35·second lead. In six laps, on a track that yields lap times in the 2: 15 area, he'd been bettering the _ competition by six seconds per lap! At die halfway point, the order had Hannah running away from Howerton, .R o be r t so n , .Pomeroy, Weinert and Gage. Robertson fell from the group shortly after with mechanical problems. Pomeroy moved 'to third . Bob Hannah, as the 35·minute mark approached, was working to lap Jim Pomeroy. Pomeroy was running fourth at the time; Weinert rode in third. . When the two-laps-to-go sign came out, Bob Hannah blasted along a full minute and 20 seconds ahead of second placer Kent Howerton. Howerton had put a full minute between himself and third place Jimmy Weinert. And Hannah was closing on Weinert - to lap the Kawasaki rider - as the white last -lap flag came outl Hannah won the moto, according to mechanic Keith McCarty, by 86 seconds. _Beh ind Howerton and Weinert were Jim Pomeroy and John Savtiski on his Bevo Forte-tuned Yamaha. Sixth through 10th places went to Team Carabela rider Billy Grossi, Eddie Cole, Gary Jones, Husky's Chuck Sun (who'd crashed and made' a strong comeback ride) and Rick Gate. For the Hurricane, round two called for no change of plan. He did wait until the third lap to take the lead, but the eventual outcome remained the same: utter domina tion of the race. It was Yamaha teammate Pierre Karsmakers who led the opening lap of the second 250cc National moto, and he was followed by Can -Am 's Rich Eierstedt, Bob Hannah, Jim Pomeroy, Jimmy Weinert, Kent ' H ower ton and Billy Grossi . . Eierstedt was looking strong, and he passed Karsmakers on the second time around in a bid for his 'first top placing at Hangtown. ....This is the first time I've ridden a whole moto here; my bike didn't break!" he grinned when it was over indicating his satisfaction with the Can-Am. Hannah immediately pulled up behind Karsmakers and began to push. He got past, but then Pierre repassed in the mudhole when Hannah took a wide line. A lap later , Hannah had squeeze back into second. Another lap passed, and he took the lead. By then, Howerton had rocketed up from his sixth place starting position into second. He held the pace , keeping Hannah within reach for the first part of the moto , but then the Hurricane steadily pulled away. Chuck Sun was making a move, too . Eighth at the end of two laps, Sun took fifth by the end of lap -fou r , then got past Pomeroy on the next time around for fourth place. Then Eierstedt dropped back - ' he w~s having trouble with the short visor he'd chosen to wear, blinded by the setting sun - and Chuck Sun picked up his eventual third place finishing position. Jimmy Weinert gassed it up, passed Jim Pomeroy, but then dropped it on a fast sweeper and detuned himself to an eventual 12th in the moto. _ When the final flag fell, Hannah had easily done it again, taking the series point lead 50 to 44 over Howerton and a good share of the Hangtown purse. For round two, Howerton rolled in second with Sun , Eierstedt and Pomeroy following . Completing the top 10 were Billy Grossi, Greg Theiss, Ron Pomeroy, David Bowman and John Savitski , • Results 125 NATIONAL: 1. Broc Glover 2-1 (Vaml. 2. Mark ' Bilfnett 1·2 ISuzl. 3.
