Most of th e sec t ions were rockpiles , wi th an occasiona l trickle of water moving across them t6 make them slippery. Section 12, for Experts only, was one of the more difficult examples. Rocky all the way, there were three case- -. snagging 'steps; the middle one waswet l an? slippery. Whaley h~d a clean g?mg when he los~ traction on the slippery step and shd backwards. On his second try , he got through with a one, the best .score of the day in that section. Sections 19 and 20 , almost a double section ,'were also wall to wall boulders with a trickle of water going through . Nineteen started along a rock ledge , then turned and clambered over a three-foot rock step. Section 20 's entrance was a wet four-foot roc k fa ce . with another four -foo ter in the middle of the sec tio n. Sections 10 and 11 were righ t next to each other, but quite different . Ten was a drop into a shallow stream with a slippery climb to get out. Eleven was a hillclimb ; scores 'b ased on how far one made it up . Clerk of the course Derrick Belvoir gav e riders permission to ride 11 first so they wouldn't have to go down the steep hill with ' soggy brakes. One spectator reported that Whaley wheelied down the lenghth of the hill . ' . The loop was approximately eigh t miles long; much of i~ straight up and down .
