's 6 10th annual Hangtown Motocross Classic. Glover, aboa rd his j im Fe lt-tuned ' 12 5 c c Yamaha , overcame a strong cha llenge from Team Suzuki's Mark Ba rn ett to top the AMA /Mr. Pi BB I25cc National Championship MX Series event with a 2·1 score. Teammate Ha nnah, riding his Keith McCarty· tuned Ya maha, fo und no threat whatsoever in the 250cc Nationa l field and won both motos co nvincingly. In a third motocross event, t he Torco Oil Four-stroke In vit a tion al Exhibition race, northern Cal ifornia 's Darrell Sh ultz torqued his Den nis Lasardi -built Kawasaki thumper to a de cisive victory after early challenger T ommy Croft suffered valve failure on hi s Kn obb y Shop ' International .Hond a , Four-stroke National Ch am p Rod Kentner turned in a second place ride on his Powr?ll Yamaha . .Former AMA G~and N~tlOnal Cha~plon and Interna tional SIX Days Trial veteran Dick Mann. 44 . took third on his modified TT500 Yamaha. Crowd size estimates varied from the Dirt D iggers North M .C .'s conservative "over 30 ,000" to the Plym ou th police chiefs ambitious guesstimate of 60 .000 . The chief. at the ti me, was prepa ring an . exp lan a tion why h is 20·man crew ha d littl e or no co ntrol on th e instant mini metropolis a nd the inevitable traffic snare. 125cc National Mark Ba rn e tt looked good in practice when , ac cording to hi s mechanic Mark Johnson, he .was turning the quickest times a mo ng the factory-backed rid er s. But in the first rnoto, it was Da n ny Turner, J im Lesniewski and J eff Ward ! who spearheaded the eighth-liter pack at the completion of lap one. Barnett followed in fourth . AMA 125cc National Champ Broc Glover ran 11th but had his throttle pegged to the stop and slashed his way into fourth by the end of the third lap . Kawasaki's Gaylon Mosier was tight on Glover's rear wheel , making his bid for a place at the front, but Mosier was feeling the effects of a bruised lung and ribs from an accident at the Pontiac Supercross event. His breathing cut short by stabs of pain, the Kawasak i rider would find it impossible to hold a winning pace near the rnot o's end. Ba rnett , meanwh ile. had moved to seco nd behind Tu rner; W a rd he ld third . Two la ps lat er , Barnett had closed in on Turner and began to pressu re the Yama ha rid er. Mosier he ld a steady third . Honda's Steve Wise was trying to wrest fourth from Glover's grip . By the mote's halfway po int, Mosier was running out of breath. and between th e 20 and 30·minute marks, he dropped back to fourth as Glove r , . o began his second -half charge for die front. ' During the same time span, Barn e tt found a way around Turner and tooli over the lead. I At the 35·minute point , GI6v closed on Turner, then took second place from him on the next lap . Steve Wise passed Mosier for fourth , then Turner for third , and the top five finishing order was set. Broc Glover appeared to be gaining on Mark Barnett as the two -la ps -to -go sign came out, but Barnett 's advantage was too great. Glover had to settle for second ahead of Wise , T urner and Mosier. Marty Moates , Donnie Cantaloupi , W a rren Reid , Bria n Myerscough a nd Jeff Ward rounded out the top 10. J~ Broc Glover left no doubt concerning the outcome of rou nd two .
