The credit belongs to the man who is actually on the track; whose eyes are blurred by dust and sweat; who strives valiantly; who errs and may fail again, because there is rio effort that cannot be improved, but he continues and tried to win; and he knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion ; he spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of winning, and who at the worst, if he fails , at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat. CRAIG RANDALL Lawton , OK CHiPs are down in 'Frisco I am one of a group of motorcyclists that ride on Highway I from Mill Va lley. CA to In verness, CA every Sunday m orn in g . I have b ee n participating on this peaceful ride for nine months. J ust recent ly (Nov. 1977), the Ca lifornia Highway Patrol started harassment techniques toward the motorcycle group , most of the acts illegal. The CH P have lectured me on two occasions and said that they are not going to stop this harassment and they aTe going to stop us from riding on this particular section of Highway I. Some of their illegal "games" have been oppressive surveillance, underthe-speed-limit herding in front of and behind the bikers , road blocks, and mass ticketing without legal clocking. These illegal acts are completely unnecessary and violate our civil rights and o ur freedom to ride our "!otorcycles. If the CH P can try to stop us from riding on this particular section of Highway I . they can do the same thi ng to anyone , anywhere. I thought this was supposed to be America, la nd of the free - not a police state. MA RY BO YD San Francisco, CA Husky helpers In the Mexicali 250 , due to a communication goof (minel) . we found ourselves with two pits at Tres POlOS and none at Cohabuzo junction . The Husqvarna pit crew was kind enough to provide complete pit service (including cactus spine removal) . We are most grateful for the help. PAT RICE #756 Lomita , CA AMA explains Puyallup TransAMA cancellation There .have been articles printed concerning the AMA's dropping the Puyallup Trans·AMA race. all of which have been one-sided based on the promoter input to the press . I have advised some press people verbally as to the problems concerning AMA at th eir tra ck and with the promoter , but no one seems to want to print AMA 's side of t he controversy fro m a ver bal conversation. Therefore, I a m writing this letter in hopes that you will print it in order to let your. readers know the other side of the story. I would like to start off by quoting to you the pu rpose of the Association and 'of Professiona l Co mpetition . The purpose of the AMA is to "pursue, promote and protect the interests of motorcyclists" . The purpose of the Professional Competition department is "to promote and increase safety throughout the competition ; to maximize the quality and skill of competition participants; to en hance motorcycle competition as a spectator sport; to achieve close competition; to promote comp~tition for which different brands . of motorcycles are availa ble; to .e~courage p r iva t e in divi dua l parn cip a n ts as well as sponsored and team participants; and in all respects to promote the advancement of motorcycl e competition" . Now to get to the problems at Puyallup: I have personally attended the Trans-AMA race at Puyallup for three years - 1975 . 1976 and 1977 . Each year I have run into the same problems. and each year I advised the promoter of the problems and asked him to correct them . The promoter did no correct them . The situation at Puyallu p , since 1975 , is as follows ; I) Fencing around the pit area is not adequate to keep out spectators . The fence does not extend to the ground, which allows spectators to sneak into the pits. 2) T here are three openings leading into the p it area on ly one of which has a gate. 3) T he security used a t pi t ga tes has neve r been adequat e . Secu rity people .wou ld leave their stations all owing spec ta tors access to t he pits. 4) W e have neve r ha d eno ugh inside p it security to h el p remove . u nauthorized people from the pits. 5) Fencing around the outside perimeter of the track is not adquate to kee p specators from crossing the _ track. . We have had instances each year of people crossing the track during a race and almost being hit by a motrcycle. This is dangerous to both the rider and the spectator. 6)We have neve r had enough security around the race track to keep spectators from crossing the track. 7)The promoter has continually sold pit passes at his race. In fact I had someone purchase one for me at the 1977 race at a cost of $10. The selling of pit passes at any AMA race meet has not been permitted, and the promoter of each race meet agrees to this in a signed agreement with the AMA prior to the race. 8) The promoter of an AMA ra ce meet agrees to pay to the AMA 24 hours prior to each race meet , the total purse and officials fees. In the three years that I have attended the Puyallup race I have neve r received all of the requ ired monies on Sa turday before the race. In fact . I have had to wait until Sunday m ornin g , the d ay of the race, to co llect officials' fees for the last three years. The Puyallup Trans-AMA race lias been successful. There is no reason that the promoter could not have improved the conditions as stated a bove. There is also no reason that the promoter should have sold pit passes. In my mind, the promoter does not have an interest for either the spon or the spectators and therefore does not deserve to have one of the most prestigious races on the AMA circuit. MICHAEL A.
