crowd of 50,000 at Ouhon Park in Cheshire, Pat Hennen and Kenny Roberts were in invincible form. But the British squad packed the midfield places to ensure an overall British victory by 435 points to 379 . and to win at Oulton on the day by 141 to 130. Kenny Roberts and Pat Hennen - again formed an impressive spearhead for America 's challenge but their brilliance alone was not enough to carve up Britain's 45 point advantage from the first leg . Things looked good for the visitors when Barry Sheene added to a weekend of woe by sliding off at slow speed at Esso Bend on the third lap his first crash for nearly two years. He remounted but had lost a lot of ground . He was never in the hunt and with Mick Grant .(Kawasaki) sadly off song Britain's fortunes took a dive . With Roberts and Hennen unstoppable out front and Gene Romero battling with Dave Potter for third place, the Americans looked as though they might do enough in this race to make a grandstand finish . ' . But Romero hit trouble and with a big-end gone he toured round slowly on the eighth lap to wait at the finish line and grab a consolation point for last place. ' Barry Ditchburn caught and passed Roger Marshall to fill fourth spot. And even though Dave Aldana , Skip Aksland and Mike Baldwin packed the midfield places America won the leg by only two points: US 69 , GB 67 . Desp ite his Mallory accident Ron Haslam discharged himself from hospital at 7 a.m. on Monday morning, dashed to Oulton and took his _place in the team . He finished a gallant ninth. Disaster struck the Americans before the second crucial race had even started! Skip Aksland's Yamaha : stopped on the warm tup lap and . despite a sporting gesture from Barry Sheene, who tried to tow Skip back to the start , the visitors started with just seven men in their squad instead of eight. Reserve Bruce Hammer had already been ruled out wh en he blew his engine in practice and Gene Romero having run in a rebuilt motor the final glimmer of hope had gone for the Americans. Again Roberts and Hennen ruled the roost with Sheene battling through to third place after another mediocre start. But the British squad once more _ filled th e midfield places. Dave Aldana's late spring . carried him through to fou ph spot but behind h im Dave Potter, Roger Marshall , Mick Grant , Barry Dirchburn and John Williams grabbed the points to tilt the scales back in Britain's favor. Rob erts, who had led the pack fr om midway round the opening lap after passing quick starter Mike Baldwin, held the lead until the start of the eleventh and final circuit when his ignition began to fail and he waved Hennen through, but Roberts was so far ahead of th e rest that he hung on to second spot. • Results First Leg: 111 laps. 30.37 miles) FOR THE FEW WHO DO Accomplished enduro competitors ... serious desert riders .. . and experienced motorcyclists who appreciate the finest in European machinery ...
