MA R . 12 Bultaco's Bernie Schreiber finally won his spurs as a fully-fledged factory rider amid the dusty, rocky hills of Tarassa in northern Spain last Sunday. ' Brilliantly juggli ng the works machine in a style that now has many Europea n observers hailing the arrival of a fu tu re 6 world cham pion. the chee rful 19-yea r. ol d Ca lifornia n . scored his second World Championship win in a fortnight . . gave Bultaco their fifth straight win - and earned himself the ' right to contest the remaining seven title rounds with full factory support. Best on both 25 -section la ps of the Sant Llo renc del Munt course that was strangely subdued 10 severity , Schreiber beat England 's Martin Lampkin by 5.5 marks but a really solid performance from the Yorkshire ace saw him lea pfrog over World Champio n Yrjo Vesrer i nen from Fi~land. into a four-point lead in the series. Vesrerinen, with an anxious frown now replacing the sm ile that he had ca rried through his early win s in Ulster and Wa les. was struggling . first with water in the ignition of his Bulta co . and ! hen with a puncture in the > second last section . that cost him a precious five marks. Aft er five years of he ckling and jeering from the Spanish crowds over his switch from Ossa to Yamaha. Mick , Andrews won a place in Spanish hearts once again . riding into third place on ... an Ossa! Andrews. supremely fit and right ba ck in form again . turned out on a bog -standard 310 cc machine . after ag reei ng in mid -week to a one-off ride for the Barcelona factory he helped to two European titles in 1971 and 72 . A victory for Andrews would have been a real t..iry-rale return - but the Derbyshire ace found the steering of th e 310 heavy going compared with his Yamaha . and lacking a little in bot tom end power. His th ird pla ce . won on the strength of a faster time than Swedish cham pion Ulf Karlsson on rheMontesa, now gives him a share of th ird in the cham pionship with the man he beat. Next was British champion Rob Shepherd . beating Vesrerinen by only j hree tenths of a mark . despite blowing the Honda's front fork seals after the start of the seco nd lap and having to contend with "pogo stick" suspension for the res t of the dista nce.. Bu t that wasn't all of Shepherd 's worries . At Carlets, the sixth section on his second tour . Shepherd punc tured . He fitted a spare tube. but had no pump - and had to wait 20 minutes before SWM 's former Ita lian cham pion Giovann i Tosco ca me to his aid!'
