D.S. pleasure of reading Bob Bitchin's column. But with a " Voices of- the West" letter complaining of him in just about every issue , I decided it was time to check out his writings. After reading it , all I can possibly ' say that is printable is: Sit on it, Hawg lover! You are doing more damage to the relations between street and dirt bikers than any 10 entities put together! Are you sure you aren't really a Sierra Clubber in disguise out to needle the dirt riders into a full-fledged war with the streeters, thus luring them away from the real fight they have on their hands, that of salvaging our desert from the grasp of various government bureaus and preserving it for dirt bike actitivies , What really makes me sick is the thought that portions of dirt bikers' money (subscriptions and otherwise) are going to pay for that sick co lumn . JOYCE MAY Barstow, CA Don't feel sorry for Dion I am writing this letter to reduce any sympathy Fred Dion might have . generated for himself with the statement that he lost S8,OOO on th e CMC Golden State Series, IH my park alone he earned and pocketed between $15 ,000 and $17 ,000. He did not pa y th e rent on Helvetia Park. nor did he pay th e company he rented the tractor from . He also stiffed the . trophy company and his own next -door neighbor; who p rovided security for his events. . In addition to a ll these people , he . has not contribu ted to the Nationa l .Motorcycle Pa trol who wor ked so ha rd for so long. These people can least ofall afford to work for nothing, As far as I have been able to find out , he a lso left the man who did his advertising holding the bag for several thousand dollars, In m y conversations with Stu Peters over the past few days. he has assured me that Fred sent in all the license applications , some dated as far back as December, but he [Dion ] did apologize for being a thief, because there was no money submitted with 'the applications. . Jon Boyette has taken over the . remainder of the races scheduled at Helvetia Park (Mar. 12 and 26) , and I am sure he will provide a race track as fast , safe and challenging as possible. If the following Dion had will give Boyette a chance•. he will see that you get the fairest shake possible. I would also like to thank everyone who attended the Feb . 26 race for their cooperation and understanding. Jon did the best job he could, putting on a race with only three days ' notice . BRYAN PATTERSON General Manager Helvetia Pa rk Sacramento. CA Thanks from the England family There is no higher tribute you all could have given Donald than to hav e a Memorial 1T race in his honor and at the same track , Perris, where he began racing 20 yea rs alto . The Big Referee Upstairs gave Donald the Checkered Flag much too soon for us . But we are consoled that Donald lived full bore and died doing what he liked best - preparing a track for his favorite people ..:.. motorcycle racers. . A specia l tip of our fami ly helmet to, The Perris Raceway owners , Len , Faye , and J ack for donating their raceway and effort ; Jerry and Grace Burton, former Perris owners, for their Memorial plaque containing the poem written by Grace ; ~ary and Bob Sanders for their tireless support ; Steven Gehrke and AI and Ka ren Snow, retired Huntington Beach Cycle Pa rk officials. and to Darlene and Carolyn Burton and the flagmen for donating their time and effort running the race; the many shops for their riders donations and our many friends and former customers for their loyalty and attendance. • We. his family , are deeply honored that you would give the proceeds of the race to us. The love displayed by his "Brothers-on -wheels" is the main reason Dad chose motorcycles as his hobby , his business , and his way of life. HOPE, MA R K AND ·DO NN A ENGLAND 395 Cycle Pa rk Adelanto, CA Pipe blues After their. latest fiasco , I'd like to express my opinion of the folks at Bassa ni Pipes. Originally, I bought a pipefor my • 1T500. It hit the frame in three places when I tried to install it . Also , they had another surprise for me; the back part of the front fender had to be cut off to clear the pipe. Well ,. I sent i't back. After a month and a half of "We just sent it today ," I . finally got the pipe back. It only hit the frame in one place. I sure hated to ding a new pipe so it would clear the front downtube, but I didn't want to wait another six weeks . Additionally, the muffler end of the pipe was supposed to be bolted to the rear fender bracket. The eight-ounce rear fender has three ' bolts. That makes about a three-ounce design load for each bracket. Obviously that bracket won't carry the weight of a muffler. So I took the bike into a welding shop and had the bracket reinforced. Meanwhile , the spark arres tor assembly insert for the m uffler, which I ordered with the pipe, was not included . When I got it , it wasn 't complete. When I finally got a ll of the spark arrestor, it was too la te for a planned ride. Some guys never learn. Bu t Bassa n i was the only place where I cou1d get a replacement for the pipe's rear section. I very carefully ordered th e section of pipe with its bracket (welded on). I talked to two people and when I sent m y money in, I wrote down what I wanted. Today the bare pipe came - so I'm writing this letter of "a pp recia tion ." JERRY SAVELLE Covina, CA
