Ra iney, who won 44 races as a Novice last year, was aboard a Shell Thuett Ya m a ha and he led a first-through-fifth Yamaha sweep of the event. Second place in th e 10-lap race went to Ru ss Davis as he turned in a last la p cha rge that got him around Ray Duga n . . Expert . By Expert ma in time the tempera - ture had p lu m meted down to the "misera b le for Flori da" point and the crowd ha d th in ned out from its "packed in" earlier sta te. Ha rley- Davidson factory rider Ted Boody easily won the first Expert heat . finishing way ahead of Ra nd y Goss , who was aboard a Bart Markel-tuned H ·D . Heat two went to Californian Eddie Lawson. Lawson had to power his Shell Yamaha around fellow Californian Scott Pearson , who led the first two laps. • By virtue of fastest heat time Lawson held the pole position for the main event , b ut that advantage lasted scant seconds as his bike gave up the fight off the line. Goss led the pack around at the end of the first lap and that was that for the biggest hunk of the Expert 's share of the $5 ,000 p urse. W ith Goss headed for the trophy girl's kiss, attention turned to the Scott Pearson /Ted Bood y fight for ~ n n eru p honors. Pea rson led the first ru .th ree la ps and was hold ing off Bood y's every challenge. Pearson almost threw it away go ing into the first turn on the fourth lap . but he sa ved it . The near ge t-off made Boody ba ck off a nd Ga ry Scott sta rt ed to close on th e pair . but a la p lat er Boody p icked up stea m and go t around Pearson and the race went int o th e books with Coss , Boody. Pea rson and Scott fini shing 1-2 ·3·4. Beh ind th e front running fou r Harley-Da vidson rid ers came Ohio's Ricky Campbell, aboard a Bill Kennedy Triumph. Campbell's H-D R750 was stolen early in th e winter and he picked up the Kennedy ride fo r the '78 seaso n. The pants legs of his leathers have "America n" emblazoned on them . so perhaps Kennedy's American engines are about to surface. ~ Abnormally cold weather and bad track co nditions marre d the MXLsponsored / Bill West -promoted event , ' bu t with a little help from Ma Nature and attention to the track surface by the likes of a Ha ro ld Mu rrell - the event could become an annua l looked forward -to -race. • Results EXPERT: 1.
