ning at San Hill Ranch. The Sears Point Motocross cancelled and a lot of mad riders came to good 01' Sand Hill. Rory R u nd le was out to try his new Husky, but the water stuck his throttle and he was out of the running. No one could see who got the holeshot, but the leader in a surprise first eight laps was the Novice rider Danny Loughen. He was pulling away from the hot Expert , Rick Timmossi. Bu t on the eighth lap Timmossi took the lead and held it 'til the 12th la p. Then the lead was short lived for Chris Williams, as he led for lap 12. Another leader emerged for laps 1315, the 250cc winner Shaun McConn , but he co uld n't hold off the hard ridi n' Rick Timmossi, the mu d -soaked overall winner. McConn fi nished second overa ll. T he 125cc class was the biggest class of th e day with a lot of good riders. The lead change d several tim es. T he first la p saw Bob Gr a y lead bu t th is was short- lived as the Mo raga Coffee Shop special rode by Mike Ch auncey, with the hel p of the ~ -lapper Roger Lino . Roge r proved defeat for Chau ncey as he could not make the big hill and lost the lea d. Dave Wilkerson took over for laps seven and eight before a new leader found a dry spot and a faster way. Craig Richey led laps nine-l l , Now the kid from Manteca, Ch uck Aksland, grabbed the front spot and almost won but a chain broke and left him out. : Wilkerson found first place again but on the last lap little Ricky Ryan, who had been very consistent, grabbed the lead and won the 125cc class. All the riders enjoyed the mud course and were glad it did not cancel. W ith t he District 36 officials he re to help, everything went very good. ~ T he 125cc Expert race had to be the best race seen all year. In the first moto, Phil Douglas had the lead with Cha rlie Holcomb hot on his tail and . I Mike'Schlow ready for any other action. IO n the last lap Douglas was leading -b ut his motor went sour. H olcomb took the lead but lasted only to the . 1 horse-shoe hill and his motor quit. -Schlow took over for the win with Mike Margaz second and Da ve Woodall third. Then the seco nd rnoto ca me and Shawn Cady, riding for J ensen's Cycles out of San Jose, was searching for a win . It too k Shawn 'til the last lap to win the second moto . Six riders were running for first , bu t the super riding of Dave Woodall kep t th ings togeth er and he was the overall win ner. The Vets class was full with the hot four-stro ke Honda of R ich Lo kke swooping the troops. Don Rich , on the TT Yamaha two-stroke go t second. Steve Machad o won the Vet Expert class. Old Timer racing was won by Gary Arnold. Joe Hachenberg was pu shing Arnold all the way . Jack Lewis , riding out of Dam Cycles won the Old Timer Expert race after some lay-off from an auto accident. That accident didn't slow N~ down any! , •. Shawn Cady brought his Jensen's Cycle Suzuki out to Sand Hill Ranch, placing well in the 125cc Pro class. Mini bike action had Bin Mon Avery winning, b ut the local kid from Discovery Bay, Rich Mythen , is fastimproving and he ran second overall. Joe Headley had his Honda tuned in for the win in the full class of 250cc Experts. Big John Roeder could not be stopped as he won both rnotos . Second place went to Beto Rossi, a fine rider over from Spain and going to college. Randy Okada rode hard for third . Other Experts were full of explosions with a few hot tempers that had to be cooled off by officials, then they got down to some good riding. It seems as though the Santa Cruz pilot Curt Wilcox cannot be beat at Sand Hill. He won both motos after some playful antics , making it look like he was falling off. He came from behind in both motos for the win . Tim Alarcon rode ha rd for second. Rick T im m ossi ha d to settle for third. . In the 80cc race , Cha nd ler took the measure of Dan "The Brute" Moore , and in the IOOcc bash he edged out Jack Ba rt on , one of Chandler's toughest competitors for 1978. Den nis Spence, . out to regain his number one Sportsm a n rating , trophied twice, finishing second to Keith Day in the 250cc Expert and then winning by a bike length over Matt Carothers in the 500cc class . Norma n Combs took home two trophies, winning the 500cc Novice and p lacing seco nd beh in d Gary Vincelet in the 125cc class. In the 250cc J u nior event, Kir k Brewer and Jeff Nichols battled back and forth until Brewer went ahead for the win . . Junior Wayne Busby took a large lead at the start of the 500c c event and outdistanced Ken Digges for a victo ry.
