Kinky Ken . wh o n ev er quits and ha d berserked it from half a lap down to overtake five riders , also blew by the frustrated Maniac , wh o cou ld not know that Kinky's same fla t out WFO style would hand him the Expert overall in the next rnoto, Amateur Kaptin Kirk , still way out in front of the other Experts , followed Put-Put in for the Amateur win . ahead of a fading Jumbo Jim and Driller Dal e . who rode strong until he got knocked down and sat out several laps . The second Intermediate/Novice bash was a carbon copy of the first . with Intermediate Buffalo Bill repeating the ho leshot and wire-to wire win , and Come-on Chuck and Jowls Jim taking second and third for the motq and the overall. Novice Tired Ted led the second wave and finally licked his propensity to fall while leading, managing only to kill his engine twice before earning his first overall win since joining th e Gang. Juicer Joe took second for th e mot o and the overa ll, while Funky Frank, again rid ing very strong a nd avoidi ng th e waveri ng sand lanes th a t wer e dropping tail -e nd N ovices. with almo st sla pstick regu la rity, breezed in for th ird ove ra ll. T he second Amateu r/ Ex pert moto was the race of the day. Am a teu r Ka p tin Kirk got the holeshot aga in , bu t Experts Kink y Ken and Mania c Mike closed fast a nd passed ea rly, with Put-Put Peter m oving up stead ily fro m a not he r b ad sta rt . Maniac , kn owin g his KTM handled th e deep sa n d turns better , wa s absolutel y rear -ending Kinky for three la ps , pushin g h is Yamaha t o th e limits while th e y swap pe d th e lead severa l tim es before Kink y dropped ba ck for a breather. Repulsive Ray . riding hard and steadil y, moved into second . Meanwhile. Expert Put-Put had closed relentlessly to fourth behind Kinky , thus setting upthe day's dramatics as both di ced for third place like hungry lions . Put-Put , who likes 10 lose the way DeCoster does, needed' the third combined with his ea rl ier win for th e Expert overall. But if Kinky held on , Maniac Mike . stretching his lead with every lap , would take the gold. PutPut put on a neat inside pass on th e wh ite flag lap , with Kinky dropping back 30 vards, but somehow he closed the gap ~s th ey approached the tri ck y combination of deep sand straights a n d tight off'-ca m ber tu rns . Here , Kinky pulled off th e damned est WFO pass of th e da y and held on to take th ird by less th an a bik e length. Jumbo Jim . no doubt sma rting from his first m oto fa d e a nd fe arin g it m ight become a hab it . turned it on 10 pass ea rly leader Kapt in Kirk fo r first Amateur ove ra ll. Totel Lake Cycles sweeps race #8 B-r: Sue Sykes PUYALLUP , WA , FEB . 26 Blaine Elledge and Bruce Hill took the first and second overall spo ts for Tote! Lake Cycl e at Puyallup's Winter Series Race #8. Pat Jacobson dominated the 250cc Pros at Puyallup. Tom Poa ge pu shed his series point lead over th e to p with a fou rth p lace overa ll Sunda v. Hot and heavy ac tion was in the 100cc Junior class wit h Brad Bolmes (Suz) g rabbin' the lOp b rass and points lead in the series. Mik e Felt (Yam) and Da rren Sch mor (Suz) picked up seco nd a nd third 10 keep th ings tight for the nex t two weeks. Pro d icing in th e 250 cc class was a Ja cob son C onn ecti on . with t he Bell evu e Su zuk i-mounted rid er flyin g over th e co u rse with th e great est of ease. Ga ry Ra cca (Yam) hit a solid 2-2 for t ha t ne xt slot and Duane Marker (FMF) was in third overall . Mucky moto at Ogden By Maxie Abemethy OGDEN . UT, FEB . 19 Neither sleet nor snow nor slimy mud could stifle the enthusiasm of most of the riders at the OCAsponsored motocross ra ce at Ogden . The mud was knee high in places . a nd some of th e p uddles were d e ep e n o ug h to h ar b or rr o ut , Undaunt ed , many m o to cro sser s turne d up for th e first ra ce of the year. Paul Da wson . president of the OCA club . and Bob Best handled th e job of 'who go t what place' beautifully even though it was hard to te ll who was whom because of the mud . The sta rt ing lin e was compa ratively dry . but th e fir st corn e r was a holesh ot killer. Getting that shot usually me ant th at th e rider had the ra ce in his muddy ba ckpocket, if he didn't bomb out in th e corner , if he co uld manage to st ay upright and if his stren gth hel d up until th e fini sh . All th ose "i fs" co m bined crea ted a very interest ing ra ce. T he mud a nd p udd les m erged togethe r a nd for med som e very slip pery co rners , but it was th e MOTORCYCLES 49
