CA , FEB . 26 Sunday started early with a fog enshrouded track that pro ved to be a blessing in disguise . As if on cue , th e fog lift ed as the first grou p of riders went ou t for practice, but it was still in evidence. just high eno ugh to hol d the moi stu re in the tr ack a nd m ak e r idi ng a co mple te p leas u re . Pros, especially the 250cc class , were ou t enm asse and proved the spectators wit h a grea t show . It was DG rider St eve Bauer th a t rea lly had th e specta tors on th eir feet as he turned the six mi les of j u mps , turns a n d whoop -d ee -doos into a supe r h ighwa y. Using a LeMa ns type start, Open Pr o Ken Morga n was the firs t man around. follow ed by Ron Utas ki. Wheelsmith's Tom Taylor . also riding O pen had a firm hold on third with Maico mounted Jeff Eierstedt in fourth . By the end of lap one. Ba uer was on the mov e and was th e eigh th ride r to come around. An d th e folks hadn't seen anyth ing yeti When th ey came by on the second lap , Morgan was still holding first place but Bauer had been a busy boy and was practically riding double with Morgan in se cond . Eierstedt had mov ed up one notch to take over third and Cla y Mus olf had broken into th e elite front-runners as he moved in t he third O pen spot. Jerry Ra ymen , on a 250cc Ya m ah a , had been passing people left and right and had moved fro m 13 into fifth . Ba uer was in total contro l by the th ird lap as he dropped Morgan to second . Eierstedt was still holding in t hird and Raym en had disposed of one more as he moved to fo urth . As the white flag came ou t it was Bau er going away wit h Mo rg a n seco n d and R aym en gelli ng by Eie rstedt t h ird. Bauer was the man of the hou r as he too k th e checkered flag follow ed by Morgan . R aymen , Eierstedt and Mike Hannon . Bill Ba rl ow had th e 125 cc P ro d ivision in his h ip pocket from th e drop of the flag . It too k him one lap before he really started to pull a way a nd th e on ly one who gave him serio us chase was Rob ert Gray. a nd by th e checkered Ba rl ow had managed to ga in daylight on him. Mike Godfrey got off to a slow sta rt but managed to get around Dou g Kondus for third. R a n d y H a yes led th e Open Intermediates and Vets from wire-to wire to capture the overa ll win . Brad Vandenbury, another Open Interm ed ia te , gO! stuck in traffic a nd was a d istant second behind Hayes. Jim Garton was right on his tail but time ra n out and he had to settle for third . Chu ck "Feets" Min ert , a living legend a nd as much of a n inspiration as raci ng itsel f. was the first Vet to m ake it hom e on is ever -fa it hfu l BSA and proved that if you've gO! it you never lose it and "Feet s" has a lways had it.
