Chaffee Open class winner at AMC By Te rry W hytal CARLSBAD, CA, FEB . 19 Combine perfect wea ther, some interesting cours.e changes and a stream flowing across the track and you have the American Motocross Cl ub (AM C) motocross a t Carlsbad Raceway. As the first 500cc Pro race blasted down the starting chute, David Gerig (Suz) took the lead , followed by Mark Ellis (Yarn). Halfway through the rnot o, Ellis got by Gerig bu t Gerig fought back and regained the lead. Ellis stayed right on the Suzuki rider's rear fender until Gerig bobbled, repassed him and made it stick this time. Meanwhile, Yamaha-mounted Chris Ch affee had worked his way up behi nd the leaders, passed Gerig and almost got Ellis before time ran out. 22 Gerig again pulled the holeshot in moto two but Chaffee and Ellis were right behind. Chaffee pressured Gerig lap after lap before finally getting by just four laps from the finish . Chaffee took the checkers in the lead and with a 2-1 score won the overall. Ellis was second a nd Gerig went home with a third. Acti on in the 250cc Pro race was p rovided by Suzuki-mounted John Ba ricevic and Max Signon on a Ya m a h a . Afte r t wo bar- banging rno tos they traded wins and Signon clai m ed th e ove rall , Baricevic was second and Brian McNamara (KT M) thi rd . Suzuki r id er Rodney Brand dominated both motos of 125cc Pros . Dan Sch ramm (Yam) tried his best to catch Bra nd and looked very fast but had to settle for two seconds. Final tally' was Brand first overall, Schramm second and Dave Good on a Yamaha third. Results in Results Sec tion. Gillman, Reid and Fuller win at SRC Sadd/eback MX By Terry Whytal O RA NGE, CA, FEB. 12 Today's Sad dleback Racing Club (SRC) races were held on an interestingly combined front and rear Sad d leb ack course , using the b ac k starting gate. Scott Gillman grabbed the lead at the start of the first 500cc Pro race. Yamaha rider Ken Morgan and Maico-mounted Jeff Witherell stayed close behind Gillman as t he three raced around the sometimes tacky but often muddy track. Gillman led at the fi nish followed by Morgan and Witherell. Moto two once again saw Gillman hold the lead from start to finish . Second place was de finitely up for grabs as Morga n and W it herell rocketed around the track , both looking very fast. At the ch eckers th e order was G illm a n , Morga n a nd W itherell. T he best racing of the day was provided by Team Hond a riders Steve Wise and Warren Reid, with John Sa vitski (Ya m) tryi ng to pla y the spoiler, As the three tore th e track up in the first moto, different ridi ng styles Scott Gillman 1 2051leads Ken Morgan and the rest of the 500cc Pros at Saddleback Racing Club's motocross. were noticeable. Reid was smooth, W ise slightly wild , bu t Savitski was almost out of control. It seemed as if Savitski would 1\"0 straight through the turns and crooked down the straights. Smoothness paid off for Reid as he took the checkered flag ahead of Wise and Sa vitski. Re id never looked back in the second moto to lead all the way . Wise was never far back and looked as if he was going to charge into the lead at any time but had to settle for second. A more controlled Savitski came in third. The 125cc Pro races were a field day for the little Suzukis. Don Fuller, Brian Jordan, and Bobby McGregor, all riding RM125s, swept the class . After two fast and screaming races th e overall positions were, Fuller first , J orda n second and McGregor th ird. In addition to the regular program today's races were used as qualifiers for the GNC race in the Astrodome. The first . five positions from each class became el igible for the Grand National Championship (GNC) to be held in the Houston Astrodome the day aft er the AMA Supercross . Silva takes DeAnza MX 250cc Intermediates By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD ~ CA , FEB . 19 The 250cc Intermediates at De Anza are extremely competitive, . and .one of the bes t of them is J ohn Silva. He put his Rincon Kawasaki way out in fr on t of both motes , taking the class by storm. The first moto saw Silva shoot int the lead with Scott Quick (Suz) in h pursui t . Behind Quick , Bob Brote (Ya m), Billy Saylors (Yam) a nd Ro Bu rt on (Suz) filed arou nd the first tum. In the ope ning laps, Silva and Q uick pulled a big lead and were a l alone. Although Quick couldn't sta . with Silva's lightning pace, he was fa r from giving up a nd kep t th e brigli green rider in sight. Abo ut halfWay through the race, Silva was getting'). little over -confid ent and low sided in a tum. He got up and remounted, ho ever , before Quick co uld take advantage of his mistake. Silva went on to win the race, but he rode a litt! more conservatively. Q uick got second . followed by Broten and Saylors . ~.. In round two , Quick grabbed tli e holeshot and held off Silva for about two laps . After that, it was th e green machine all the way . Quick, Brotell and Saylors followed him across the finish line as they had done in the first moto . The 250cc Novice class was ho contested. In moto one , J McManus (Suz) was on the gas. grabbed the holeshot and led fro m beginning to end. Beh ind him Bu t Baker (Yam), Davey Jones (Yam), a Ii Doug W hite (Suz) di ced back a n forth. As they crossed the finish lin i was McManus , Baker , Whtie an J on es. In th e second moto , McMan jum ped into the lead once more. This time , however , Bak er was right on~liiS tail. On the third lap , Baker saw . n op eni ng a nd put it to use. McMan'ils was too tired to try to take it ba ck, so he settled for second. White got third
