Roeseler rolls on at Brush Busters Boobie Run By Gary Laudig LUCERNE VALLEY, CA , FEB . 26 Overcoming an injured shoulder and a pressing motion picture schedule, Larry Roeseler pow er · ed his OR 390 Husqvarna to an other victory at th e AMA 0 -37 hare and hound held by the Brush Busters M.C. After t h e sky d iver's pa rachute furled to t he ground, t he b anner dropped , kicking off the sixth annual Brush Busters " Bust Out Hare and Hound." The ra cers headed up the valley toward t he fa m o us " t a n k slapper" wash . Roeseler cruised through the nasty bike swallowing whoops in the lead with Brad Henson about 20 ya rds back. You could almost feel Hanson's e xci te m e n t having Roeseler in view. " I know you are the best ," Henson was thinking, " bu t I' m fast and I have on e more gear than you do Larry , so don't make any mistakes. II 18 Bill Saltz ma n was the next bike, then came Kevin Hasten , E12 , and t hen the m ishap . R on Bebo g ot sideways in the deep whoops . Shoo tin g a cros s the wash , Ron intercep ted Bob Gilbert's line of ni ght a nd Gilbert bit th e dust. T he bo unci ng co nti nued for another m ile th en the racers cleared the wash to the right. Gary " H awkeye " Charters , running first "C" Expert on a Su zuki wit h about three inches of suspensio n travel , kept his lead o n fir st Amate ur Lee Scheffers. R igh t be hi nd Lee was Ed Zarp , rid ing th e first of two flats, and having trouble keeping a he a d of Maico-rnounted Bill Becker. In the second wash , a tight on e , Downhill Alex a nder m oved up five posit ions , edging ou t Scheffers for sixth overall. Bill Friant passed Dick Camp and John Watkin s, setting his sights on Bill Becker. Heading for the powerline road Paul Christensen made up 16 positions a nd was still m oving because he -d idn't kn ow J ohn Prater and Marc Cartwright were h a ving . problems back in the p ack . By this time Roeseler , Henson and Kevin Hasten were through the roller section and heading ba ck behind the red m ou ntain up th e lon g ro ad -wash. Larry started ope n ing up a marginal lead on t he next two racers as the "T ire Demon" nailed H ens on 's fro nt and m ade life m isera bl e fo r the 250 cc ace. Charlie Hamill took adva ntage of Charters ' su sp e nsio n plight and po wered his Yamaha into th e lead a lo ng with Jeff Kaplan and J ody Belknap. The number one enduro girl , Diane Blauer, was holding down first overall girl on her KTM Roeseler cleared the flatlands and was heading for the p its on a tra il parall eling Camp Rock Road . "Joltin' " J oe Lockhart had the Trailb ike lead a nd intended to keep it. Kev Hopkins and Kenny Dodd wanted the lead , but the new el em en t this wee k, d ust , made the p assing quit e a job . Bill Tarling had to gas it as fas t m ovin g Bob W est had his 250 cc Ossa on Tarling's fender as snug as a JT stickie . T er ry Davis, Steve Eck a rdt and Ron Hill worked their bi kes through the fl at, ta ble top' li ke rock a n d sa nd sec tion headi ng for be d r ock . Making up for a disaster similar to Bob G ilbert's, Francis Ch ristensen was following Cha rl ie Good b a n through the virgin up ·and d own tricky stu ff. Rouding the tum Ken Ma w, W a rr en Coo pe r and St eve Spragl e went t hrough the gea rs enjoyi ng the wash im mense ly. Pet e Kapko , Pat Ferris a nd Paul Krause soo n discovered th e new wash was narrowin g . Before panic set in, arrows headed the racers up th e right bank into fl at , windy terr a in . R on Mull igan , Ha rr y Cant r all , Ge orge Stoffel and Howard Markham . all Seniors, followed th e cou rse up th e bank and on toward Bessemer Mine Road . By now Roesel er was flyi ng thro ugh th e rollers by th e roc kpi le . Sh eila Hopkins was steadi ly pulling . away from June Elias, Su e Hall and Kathy Campbell , but could n' t close th e ga p on Diane Blauer. Kevin H ast en h ad passed Brad H enson for second over a ll, Bill Saltzman a nd " Do wn h ill" Alexander were ga ining. Charlie Hamill was in sixth spo t as the course picked up th e wash above the ca m pgrou nd. R oeseler cleared the was h , shot across the fl at field leading into the ba se of Mayes Mountain . Ridge-running for about a mil e , the course headed down Cardiac downhill; steep with a left- hand turn at th e bottom. Takirig the checkered flag La rry racked up his third overall win . Alexander passed H enson on the last downhill for firs t 250cc Expert. Novices Ed Walters, tired of being th e Hound, decided to be the "Chasee" for a change . Pass ing J im Rother and N2, Ed wasted no time in open ing up a good lead . Steve Brookshire , Steve Priestly and Eric Hanson were glad to be out of "Tankslapper" wash and heading down some rea sonable trail. Tenth ove ra ll sp ot wa s Mr . Cra ig W eaver , firs t wh ite plate Beginner , 378 c was second , T im Jasper third . Cl iff Thomas was first trail but wa y back in the dust for a change. Charging out of th e secon d wash , Stewart Gerns was breaking trail due to Mike Kemberlin g and Bill Whalen's dust. Paul Walters beat Jack Haley and Ga ry White to the first set of day' glo's guard in g the roll ers: Ned Pritchard and Wayne Coll ins were already in them . I Rounding the red mountain , Matt Bishop and Tom Tusko had a drag ra ce up the long road -wash sect ion ! Bob J on es tried severa l times to pass Jeff Gifford in th e high pucker !!rea but the C biker wouldn 't gi ve. Ed Wal ters was at t he '''38 Dodge" when stranger Gregg Pagan wound his way past the burnt out building . Gregg was trying to get past Wayne Langner a nd Jan Morrison . Walters downshifted one gear and ' gassed h is Open bike up the trail lead ing to the top of Mayes Mountain . Catching glimpses of the finish line below, the you ng ace finally m ade th e rig ht-hand tu rn , ta ki ng him down th e spooky downhill into the swa rm of fa ns at th e finishline . The course was a mixtu re of ne v a nd old , the. finish ing pi n a classic as usua l. Th e d et erm in at ion t ro p hr winners a re Brad H enson and Hawkeye Charters. W elt o n STODDARD WELLS , CA, FEB. 26 1 In spite of a weak start , Bob Balentine , with the aide of his 400cc KTM, came on for a strong finish at CRC European Scrambles in Stoddard Wells . As the Expert and Amateur rac e gOI underwa y, it a p pe a r ed as though Wayn e Alle n (400 Yam) and Morgan Ma loc co had the hot trails . When the bomb run turned left a nd headed for sm a ll canyon, Allen made a wide , slow , sweeping turn which a llow ed Malocco to grab the lead . Alle n quickl y took a line for the canyon as d id Kent Perkin s (3 90 Hus), T om Kell y (400 KTM) J ohn Fost er (175 Yam) and Chuck Miller (175 Yam). As the course took off through some rollers and towards the deep washboard canyon Bal entin e had already begun moving up from 15th and wa s in th e process of pick ing off riders one by one. Kelly got past Malocco in the canyon as did Allen and eventually Balentine. If you could find anything that resembles a line in this canyon you had an edge over everyone . , As the course popped up and ou t of the canyon , Kelly had a good lead with Balentine , Allen, and Malocco a short d istance behin d .
