small area in less than a week must
have a tremendous impact on the
desert environment.
I want to make it clear that I do not
propose the stopping of the Pow Wow
or similar events. but I do ask that
equal consideration be given groups
attempting to promote racing in the
desert.
Imagine the effect the masses of
people camping and staying in the
desert for a week due to the Pow Wow
must have on the environment in
terms of damage to plants and
ecology , in terms of pollution from
persons living in areas not equipped to
handle the wastes, in terms of trash
left behind. Certainly it is more than
would be caused by off-road or crosscountry racing by .motorcyclists and
four -wheelers,
Yet
government
officials will not allow racing by more
than 25 at a time.
I wonder if those in the position to
dictate if desert events will or will no t
be ron cons ide r people associated with
motorcycles less responsible than those
who _enjoy rock hounding or gem
h\mting?

Much obliged, Bill
The Junior Speedway Association
would like to take this opportunity to
thank Bill Van and Garden Grove
Datsun for making the Junior
Speedway Nationals a reality In '77 .
Bill Van took it upon himself to get the
Orange County Fairgrounds to ron an
all -junior night, at a great expense to
himself. H~ put togt;ther a full raci~g
program with trophies and even pnze
money. Thank you very much!

The Hilltoppers M.C . would like it
to be known that the responsibility for
the cancellation of our Jan. 23 European
Scrambles lies completely with the
ambulance company contracted by
AMA District 37.
District 37 has offered some remuneration and their apologies for the
hassle .
The Hilltoppers feel we must set the
record straight. and we'd like to thank
everyone who came out to our race.
We'd like to see you in August for our
Grand Prix. We ha ve a great race
planned, and we've already made
arrangements for an ambulance.

Scorekeepers' lament
The scorers of Saddleback - Mary,
Shelly and I - feel that we have
waited a bit too long to write to
someone about the way we feel. We see
racers come and go , rise and fall . No
one pays attention to us unless it 's to
gripe about a scoring error. It 's not the
fact that they don't pay us any mind ;
it's the gripes they come up with .
Everyone comes up screaming over
stupid things that are usually the
rider's fault to begin with. If the nuts
would do what they were told at the
riders' meeting - where only 25%
show up, anyway - things would ron
a lot smoother.
There are always duplicate
numbers, and the riders are told to put
Xes on all three plates so we can do it
right. They put it on their helmetsl
When there is a question concerning
the results , I'd be more than happy to
ron through the score sheets and
correct an error if there is one. But
when riders and riders' parents who
know nothing about how to score come
up and yell at the top of their lungs
about some thing they thought they
saw .. . It's so frustrating. If people
would onl y take th e time to try and
understand how the races ar e scored
and ta llied instead of persisting that
we're wrong . ..
I've been doing this since I was 12
years-old. and I'm getting married this
year. I've been go ing to the ra ces every
weekend for years , and I'll be damned
if I don't know what I'm doing!
Someone from ' Cycle News should
come out and talk to us. You 'd get a
good sto ry! And maybe something can
be done in our favor this time.
