Puyallup/AMA encounter O n Thursday , J anua ry 19, I was invited to attend th e AMA Boa rd of Trustees meeting at t he H ya tt House in the Los Angeles airport. The reason for my attenda nce at the m eetin g was to show the boa r d a presentation on the eigh t years of the Puyallup Trans-AM A and how the event has become a tradition in the Northwest. I wanted th e board to be a ppr aised of th e probable re aso ni ng be hi nd the ca ncellation of t he 1978 Puyallup T rans-AM A sa n ction by . Michael A. Dil'ret e, AMA Professional Motocross Manager. Upon m y enteri ng th e m eeting room . I was int ercep ted by Douglas Mockeu , the AMA Commissioner of Ra cing. He requested that we have lunch with the .p resid en t o f t h e company. Bill Doner . a n d that somethi ng reasonable co uld be worked out to return th e Pu ya llup sa nction . During th e lunch , Mr . Mockett made it very clea r t ha t t h e requirements by the AMA for the return of th e P uya llu p sa nction for 1978 wou ld be "very reasonab le ." W it h th e satisfying confi dence he gave me. I elected not to go in front of th e board but to wait until th e proposal would reach me "within 2-3 weeks ." Today. I received the "reasona ble requirements" outlined by Michael Di Prete, needed to reinst at e the san ction. Obviously. I was deceived by Mr. Mock ett. I have neve r seen a mot ocross tra ck anywhere tha t nee ds th ous ands of feet of perma nently mounted six foot high cylone fence to ru n a T ra nsA MA event. N ot to m ent ion the $20 .000 bond to be posted a t which time th e AMA "will co nsider" the Puyallup event. The AMA has received all of its m oney in t he eight yea rs of t he Puyallup Trans·AMA. The Puyallup faci lity was th e pioneer of mo tocross raci ng in the Northwest and h as cons istently d ra wn la rger crowds each and every year .. . an ob vious boost to motorcycle sa les throughout the Nort hwest . not to mention t he strength of weekl y amat eur ra cin g . Puyallup Racewa y P a rk cannot financiall y su rvive without the TransAMA event each year, and th e doors will be shut by J une I , 1978. Puyallu p has been th e hub of weekly amateur racing for a decade bu t progress and a n u nrea son able AMA will close its do ors forever. We were more th an willing to solve the giant crowd problems (u p nearly 25 % fr om th e p revious yea r) with a d d ition a l . fencing , etc. but we appare ntly can't work wit h the AMA. Another gi a nt step backwards for th e American Motorcycl ist Association and their One Flew over th e Cuckoo's Nest management. JIM R OCKST AD General Ma nager International Ra cewa y Parks Kent . WA According to AMA Com m issioner oj R acing Doug Mock ell, Puyallup 's fa ilu re to comp ly wit h AMA saJety and security standards Jor three successive yea rs was th e reason J or th e stringen t '78 requ ir em ents. Mock ett cite d grossly inadequate spectator control (he nce th e six -foo t Jence requirement), th e sale oj pit passes an d general Jailure to insure saJe racing as a partial list oj the Puyallup track's p roblems. Th e 120. 000 bond was requ ired as a guarantee th at the Jencing an d other changes would be completed Jor th e race. Ins urance coverage, a continuing problem as we've seen recently at the SoCal riding parks, was th e basis oj th e disagreem ent . A killed or injured spe ctator m eans lawsuits against th e promoter, th e AMA , th e rider , th e rider 's sp onsor, virtually everyone even rem otely involved . Lack oj adeq uate saJety precautions aims th e burden oj responsib ility directly at th e A MA and th e promot er. Mo ckett concluded that. with suitab le saJe ty precautions, Puyallup would be welcome in t he AMA MX program . . . Editor. Tro ug h co-op I am an avid desert rider and am very mu ch co ncerned with t he p ro blems of la nd use and riding a reas. On a rece nt weeken d . m y brother- in -law and I want riding in th e J awb one Canyon , the Dove Sp rings area. We a lways park a couple m iles northwest of whe re th e pavem ent en ds on J awbone Ca nyon Road. Near here is a wat er trough for cattle and livest ock , as those who are familiar with the area will kn ow. In the past , we hav e been asked by the ranch ers not to park too close to the trough . as not to fright en away th e ca ttle tha t come to drink. We ha ve a lways coopera ted . A fen ce is built around th e trough a nd we try to sta y far enough awa y th a t cows will go in and ou t freely and without fea r. O n th is rec en t wee ke n d . we returned from a ride to fin d a note on the windsh ield of m y ca r , asking tha t we move even fart her awa y fro m th e trough . W e prom p tly did . 1 J awbon e is a great riding are a used by both two a nd four -wheelers. It is im por ta nt that we cooperate wit h th e ranchers and other land own ers , a n d meet th em halfwa y or we'll lose ou r ha lf. J OHN PE RRY Dirt y Ol d Men M .C .
