As they plowed through a tight corner near the fin ish , Kessler missed a gear. It was all Calathes need ed . Still, Kessler closed th e gap to three lengths at the flag. Open class Don Kudalski was the man to beat today. " Killer," as Kudalski is known to his fans doubled his fun by winning both motos with ease. The competition was there , but Kudalski was riding like he was the only rider on the track. Sam Da yton and John J oyner provided most of Kud a lski's com petition as they swapped second and th ird placings in the final moto tallys. • Today marked the return of Mike Hanwig to action and he showed flashed of his old form with a pair of solid fourths. Hartwig, bothered for the past three years with a trap pe d nerve in his back. will continue to race unt il the pain gets too bad again. The holeshot award for rnoto one went to Ba rry Higgins with Ku d a lski and Joyner in close formation. Kudal ski took over the lead for good .on the seco nd go a round with Joyner movi ng to second two laps la te r. Sam Dayto n a nd Hartwig moved slowly through th e pack as di d Joey Gratton . Furman Gray . who had been involved in a first turn tangle was also slicing his way through traffic nursing a painful injury to his left arm . (Gray rode the second rnoto and then went for x·rays to see if anything was broken.) Kudalski kept up his pace holding a 15 second cushion and gladly leaving the fighting to the rest of the field . The final moto of the d ay played to a setting sun and set the stage for another Kudalski run to glory. Mike Ha rt wig led the opening two laps with Kuda lski then taking over. Dayton challenged Hartwig and slipped by on la p five. Don Waller, Chris Berg , Joyner and Monte Anderson discussed the ownership of fifth through eighth place with Joyner setting his sights higher. Ku d alski slowed near the halfway point as his front tire began to go flat. "I thought it was handling a little badly," said Kud a lski later. " Bu t when you' re h aving fun you don't worry about those things. " Dayton cou ldn't close the gap on Kudalski wh ile J oyner seemed to be full of fire, but d id n't ge t a good eno ugh start and had to spend m ost ofth e moto battling h is way to third . H a rt wig slipped to fourth . The action m oves to J ax MX in Jacksonville next wee k. Although th e opening ro und of the Su percross takes place in Seattle. Washington, it appears that only Tony DiStefano will make the lon g trip for that even t. While the series is down on " name" riders and factory participation, the rider entry is up and th e action is good . It is too bad that the spectators, the people who make or break the promoters, have not turned out in better numbers. • Results For a real hardcore enduro bike with the get-upand-go to get out ahead and the guts to do it the hard way, climb on a Can-Am* Qualifier:" The Can-Am Qualifier is a rudeness.
